The dread of the 'E'? word

The dread of the 'E' word

The dreaded E word.

Exercise.

When the gyms shut down during the lockdown, I was concerned. I had recently renewed my PT membership and paid the full annual fee.

I announced that I won't allow the hardwork of my training to go to waste and I'll at least walk in the house. My awesome half, Parijat suggested "why don't you put on your #Fitbit and clock your walk?" This sounded like an excellent idea.

That was 22nd March 2020.

I made a pact to myself that I would walk all days. I'm an asthamatic so given the current pandemic situation, it became more important to me to look after my health.

When I first started, I could barely clock 3000 steps. The aim was 10K however, I wasn't keen to push myself hard.

I decided to add a workout to my walking program. #YouTube has been a saviour!! I explored different trainers. The first 3 weeks were hard. I got to know Tabata, HIIT, different types of cardio workouts - all without weights and to be done comfortably from home.

There are days when I hate to wear my exercise tracks and get on and the temptation to just let it be is extremely high.
There are days when I gorge on my culinary delights.
Then I remind myself - health is the only wealth right now more than ever.

I change into my gear and log on to #YouTube and get started. Sometimes, midway, I feel like giving up. Because my breathing gets raspy, I feel out of breath. My chest constricts and the air barely has enough passage to move freely.

I experimented with keeping a hot glass of water and sipping it in between sets and it worked.

Do I love working out? NO!

Do I want to? YES!

I set myself a goal.

Weight 50 kgs.

Exercise 4 days of the week.

Walk all 7 days - 11K per day.

It's been 117 days since and here's the progress

MARCH - 98280 Steps and 60.43 kms

APRIL - 388758 Steps and 242.35 kms

MAY - 360375 Steps and 224.38 kms

JUNE - 319996 Steps 198.98 kms

JULY so far - 162332 Steps and 100.79 kms

Exercise - Worked out for 64 days

Weight - began at 53.9 kgs NOW: 50.7 kgs

This is to share that every day matters.

What got me through?

1. Think Small - I would say, I'll just wear my shoes and exercise for 10mins - do a few AMRAPS or EMOMS and then when I was into it, I'd stretch and do more - 30mins max!

2. Use "Later" - Each time I'd feel like giving up, I'd tell myself, "Later, after this set, Farzana" and then I'd push some more!

3. Stare at a single point - This was something I discovered. When I felt it was hard and I couldn't do any more reps, I would stare at the needle on the clock and keep moving. Sometimes, I exceeded my set!

This worked for me. I am so so proud of myself!! Victory lies within.

No trainer, no gym can make it happen. ONLY YOU CAN!

What choice are you willing to make today?

Ha ha ha........for a moment I thought you were referring to Empathy the much maligned word. Anyway, walking ones legs away is wonderful thing and the writing genie enjoys it too. Lock down or not we have a ball.
