Welcome to our February LinkedIn newsletter, where we share some exciting updates from the past month at Drax. ?
Today, Public First released a research report, ‘Mind the gap: Exploring Britain’s energy crunch', which explores UK energy security and?the key decisions to be made this year that will impact energy security for the rest of the decade.?
According to the report, the greatest risk to UK energy security over the next five years will take place in 2028 and maintaining energy security will require us to extend the life of existing assets, such as Drax Power Station. ?
We announced that we have become the latest founder member of 英国谢菲尔德大学 's Energy Innovation Centre, partnering to drive forward research into carbon capture technologies, such as BECCS. ?
Alongside other partners?including Boeing , we will gain access to two of the University’s newest world class research facilities, enabling us to further demonstrate the opportunities for BECCS in the UK. ?

This month, we have launched a series of educational carbon removal blogs, touching on key topics such as:?
The latest quarterly Electric Insights report went live, providing valuable insights into the UK’s electricity grid, consumption and trends. Key takeaways from the report include how 2023 was the cleanest year ever for Britain’s electricity production, the importance of carbon removals in reaching Net Zero targets and it also uncovers the power system records Britain broke last year. ?

Recently, we announced a new partnership with Molpus Woodlands Group . The agreement will provide us with an option to purchase sustainably sourced biomass to fuel our BECCS operations in the US and enable high-quality carbon removals. ?

This month, we also published a new paper which looks at resetting the standard on corporate claims for carbon removals, and the role of these frameworks in stimulating demand for high integrity carbon dioxide removals. ?

???? This week, we’re attending and sponsoring the Decarb Connect UK event to address the pressing issue of climate change and what is needed to tackle it. Our BECCS Business Development Lead, Fe Bush , will also be leading a session, ‘Decarbonising Together – The Part We Can All Play’, in which she’ll discuss the need for all carbon removal and reduction solutions, and the importance of scaling up these solutions now. The US event takes place in March, which we’re eagerly anticipating. ?
???? We’re looking forward to attending CERAWeek in Houston, Texas next month, where we will be gathering with global leaders, policymakers and executives from across the energy spectrum to discuss what is needed to tackle the challenges facing the future of energy, the environment and climate. ?

Plus, we will be at University of Texas Energy Week, coming together with students, researchers, energy professionals and industry leaders to build community, facilitate strategic partnerships and advance research. We’re also looking forward to hearing from Laurie Fitzmaurice , President of our new global BECCS unit, who will be delivering a keynote at the event. ?
