My third employer was Hyatt Hotels Corporation and the longest. I spent 10 years working at Hyatt in different capacities and locations.
I was wondering what made me stay with a company for that long? I think I can probably create a long list. However, for the benefit of my readers, I will keep it short and relevant.
- Within the first couple of months of joining, I joined a task force to develop new training material. I had no expertise in L&D, however, I had the right amount of housekeeping operational knowledge to be a part of this project team.
- When we finished this project, I was offered to move to L&D full-time as Rooms Division Trainer. My new manager supported me and groomed me to learn the role of L&D personnel.
- Fast-forward a few years, I was looking to add new experiences to my portfolio within the organization. I wanted to be a part of a pre-opening hotel. While exploring a couple of new Hyatt hotels opening in India, one of our senior leaders reached out to my manager and skip-manager and decided to give me more than I would have imagined, a promotion along with a pre-opening hotel. I was uncertain about handling two new responsibilities at the same time, they displayed confidence in me.
- I moved to another hotel in India and got an opportunity to join one of the most prestigious and global projects designed to change the way we take care of our guests and associates. In this project, I acquired new learning, interacted with global leaders, and implemented a lot of new ideas.
- My next role within the organization was at a smaller hotel, however, that allowed me to take on new additional responsibilities, and contribute to the learning of new L&D Managers. I could use my time in conceptualizing and executing new initiatives and bringing the changes to our existing systems and processes to enhance the way we learn. Some of the projects focused on digital learning, others created new experiential learning opportunities.
- My last assignment with Hyatt Hotels was also my third pre-opening experience. This was a new brand coming to India, hence stakes were high. My manager and other senior leaders gave me a free hand to try new things. Innovation was the core of my work here and everything was designed to generate an emotional connection.
Hyatt's purpose is, 'we care for people so they can be their best.' This might have been put into words a lot later than when I joined Hyatt, it stands true to what I experienced over these 10 years. It was the place where I was valued, I learned a lot, I excelled, I was mentored, and I was trusted to bring change wherever required.
Now, drawing a parallel with Flipkart, in less than a year's time my role changed from being responsible for one region to a pan-India role. I am constantly challenging the status quo and working on ways to change the way our people learn. I have probably completed more training sessions and workshops here as compared to many of my previous employers, and, I am trusted to do the right thing!
