Draw Me a Picture

I help leaders agree on what needs to change (and how). Author, "The Agility Advantage" and "Fearless Growth?". Member, Marshall Goldsmith's 100 Coaches.
Last week, I met in Tampa with four colleagues with whom I've often huddled to think about our respective businesses and identify what we want to change versus what we want to continue.?
I had just purchased the book “Coaching by Drawing,” so I spent much of the prior weekend?sitting in front of a fire with a sketch pad, using a few of the frameworks from the book to prepare for our gathering.?
I’ve always loved using visuals, especially when working with others on a whiteboard. Drawing can unlock new perspectives and creative solutions that might not emerge through discussion alone.?
The act of translating ideas into visual form often leads to "aha moments" as connections become clearer.?
Many times when you're trying to help someone solve a problem, they're so overwhelmed by all the details in their business—and in their lives—that they have a hard time getting to the heart of the issue.
A simple drawing can often help them to realize, “Okay… it's not that hard after all. You've given me a place to write my thoughts and now I have a way forward.”
The above image is an example from the book that encourages the reader to use a staircase to chart the development so far of their career.

How has one step led to the next? When you label the steps you've taken so far, it becomes easier to envision the right next step. The same technique could be applied to other timelines and challenges.
Whether you scrawl crudely or draw elegantly is not the point. Using visual tools will turn on another portion of your brain. This leads to better collaboration and improved thinking.

4 周I love how you’re using visual tools to unlock creativity and clarity in business conversations Amanda. The idea of drawing as a way to break down complex issues and bring about those “aha moments” is so powerful.?It's one that Todd Cherches also talks about. I'm glad to see the two of you already talking here.
