The Drama of making New Year Resolutions

The Drama of making New Year Resolutions

Maybe I am little skeptic, but I can always blame it on my years :)

New Year celebrations are almost over and you would have been overwhelmed by making grand plans for parties, family get-togethers, and meet-up with friends. Amidst all the chicken, pie, and cakes, you're also surrounded by people who have suddenly made the big decision to become a totally new person next year. So, what do you do when they do that?

Essentially, they make such beautiful New Year Resolutions that the entire turn of events sounds like an amazing coming-of-age movie. I might have even shed some tears, rest assured they're plenty genuine. The resolutions are full of plans to change their old 'toxic' habits and adopt new 'productive' ones. Normally, I would've given my fair share of "Aw, how sweet!" and showered them with sweet words of encouragement.

However, I've seen enough of these fairytales having their grand take-offs but never landing at the desired destination. Hence, my skepticism about these New Year Resolutions.

Well, maybe it's not all that bad. I'm ready to admit that I might be a bit too skeptical and maybe I should try being a little more optimistic.

But again, I've laboured and every time I make up my mind to be open and not be too skeptical, I see all these people sharing their list sprawled on some fancy 'aesthetic' background on social media. If not, you'll see them contemplating over what happened in that year and jotting down on their teeny tiny sticky notes. The sight of these people labouring intensively as if they're going to solve climate change and poverty annoys the living hell out of me.

These people make super long lists to join a book club, be nice to their loved ones, go to the gym, get A+ grades in every subject, or maybe start gardening. The list doesn't end; after all, humans have unlimited desires. But we are entitled to very limited resources (in this case, time and motivation), right? That's the one axiom that was drilled into our brains during engineering classes.

Well, as if life was providing us with empirical proofs of that very axiom, these people falter at their own resolutions which they zealously impose on themselves. My philosophy regarding these matters is to not waste time over plans that you make over intense surges of short-lived optimism at the end of the year. Of course, it's altogether a different case to dream. As Buddha said, "Desire is the root cause of all suffering", one should remember this before making hasty New Year Resolutions that will never see the light of day

Having said that I made a new year resolutions to make incremental improvements every day , so much for drama on new year. ( even I made a resolution after all )

This is very true but one needs to be very careful to ensure that the resolution should not be emotionally prepared. The challenge lies in implementing necessary steps needed to be done to keep the commitment. It really needs a strong will. I would like to know is there any advice on how many resolutions should one adapt to make it effective.

One need "Resolve" inside to get any thing meaningfull done. Once you have it, you don't need to waite for "new year" and the "resolutions". Things and life happens everyday, hour, minute and not only at the start of calander year. I belive desires don't cause sufferings, lacking "resolve" in them or "wishful thinkings" cause it. Happy new year!
