Drama is Back !
The World is : in Shock / Shaken / in Turmoil / Changed for ever / Coming to an End...Superlatives are flying since the results of the US elections.
Everybody is competing for the most striking formula from quite blunt to simply brutal.
Truth is that we did not witness such a huge interest for a post-election transition process in the US since...never, as far I can remember.
Even when the first Black President has been elected in 2008, it took only a few days for the "soufflé" to come down.
But here, there's not a day without it's lot: protests, counter-protests, formal / informal meetings at Trump Tower in NYC with world leaders, businessmen and family in the most improbable ensemble.
The nominations for each key position are more followed than would be an episode in Kim Kardashian reality show. More commented all over the World than tsunamis and earthquake going on a bit everywhere.
And more than everything else, Trump position is analysed, scrutinised, decrypted minute after minute:
One moment he is the pragmatic businessman who has forgotten about all of his electoral promises. The next minute he is back to being the populist selecting only fellow hardliners.
Truth is that it's extremely entertaining.
I am avidly reading articles about every move and although I have no time to watch, I don't remember myself being attracted to the TV screen like that for many years (since 9/11 in fact).
Drama is back in politics! And as it's always the case, reality is stronger than fiction.
Who needs to watch "House of Cards" when you have this show going on?
We are spoiled in the UK: we had already a pre-quel in the aftermath of the Brexit.
The result of the referendum itself obviously, but also the dramatic resignation of David Cameron, the completely unexpected withdrawal of Boris Johnson and in the background the rebellion in the Labour party.
However, this is nothing to compare to what's going on in the US, and yet as in every successful production, we can proudly mention that Nigel Farage was the first foreign "guest star" to feature in the US spin-off...
Good or bad, that's not really what's matters here. And for my detailed views, you can always refer to earlier blogs.
Truth is that Politics is suddenly back quite high in everybody's agenda. Voters are vocals again and in numbers, including for last Week-end primaries for the right wing candidate selection in France.
There's nothing better for democracy than when people do get involved and do care for what is happening. Even when it is to contest the results of the elections.
Indifference and abstention were a plague and a dangerous one. By expressing it's views, no matter how controversial, the people is reminding politicians that they don't work in a vacuum.
They are here to serve and to fulfil a mission. And when people are involved and they are voting, they can suddenly use this leverage in a really efficient way.
So let's hope that the Drama continues. Let's hope that people stay alert and demand results and actions.
And let's hope that on the politician's side the warning is clearly heard (not so sure so far) and the right corrective measures taken. If this happens, more Drama is guaranteed!
In Greek ancient tragedies, when the intrigue was getting too complicated or too extraordinary, the plot would unfold and settled after the miraculous intervention of a "Deus ex Machina", the "God from the Machine".
Seems like a suitable outcome also here. But until we find the G.od and the device, it's going to be an interesting mess.
PS: when looking for a picture to illustrate this blog, I keyed "Trump Greek Tragedy" on Google search. Quite surprisingly, the issue has been dealt with extensively ! I suggest for example an excellent article on Huffington Post, that explains why Drama and Democracy are indeed connected. How To Turn Trump Fans? Show Them A Greek Tragedy | The ...

8 年This is brilliant! So precise and accurate. Finally you have made such good sense of these events and I congratulate you with thanks, Walter Elliott
My predictions is that Trump Presidency will be of deal making. Problem is to determine which kind of deal maker he will be: a pure trader or a strategic one? short-term gains vs longer term view? Narrow spread or Wide angle bet? The era of TRUMPISTAN starts with a choice in between 2 possible strategies. For the moment he is hedging his risks. We'll see in the near future...and no, not anybody can do it. But this has been Trump's strength: to convince you that he is your next door (billionaire) neighbour...
