Draft list of “cycle 2” products released by Washinton state

The first of November, the Washington state’s Department of Ecology (Ecology) has proposed a list of eleven product categories facing scrutiny under the second cycle of the programme for Safer Products for Washington (SPW).

Examples of products covered are paints with PFAS (polyfluoroalkyl substances) and jewellery with lead and cadmium. Regulators will assess the availability of alternatives in each priority product and could substitute ingredients where it identifies viable substitutes.

These regulations may not apply elsewhere in the US.

Ecology must present a final list of products by June 2025.

The first cycle of the programme, completed by the late spring of last Year, will now be implemented by the second one, potentially adding new restrictions to products identified in the previous cycle.
