Dr V Answers Live: Free Testosterone in Women, DHEA, and Skin Problems.

This Week, Transcend launched a new episode of "Live with Dr. V" in partnership with MindPump Hormones. This weekly livestream in the MindPump Hormones Facebook Group allows group members to ask Dr. Richard Veyna, a double board-certified neurosurgeon, questions regarding hormone health among other topics.

Friday, November 22nd, was the newest livestream in the series that happens every Friday at 12:00 PM Eastern and lasts approximately 30 minutes. Group members can join the stream and ask Dr. Veyna questions in the comments. You can watch the live stream here.

Here are Dr. Veyna's insights from this week's live stream (timestamps with questions included):

(1:00) What is an ideal level of free testosterone for women?

Women need the beneficial effects of testosterone just like men. It’s important to your wellness and overall health.?

Free testosterone is unbound testosterone that is in the bloodstream, usually around 2% in women. We use Labcorp ranges, and the range is usually 6 - 8 picograms. This depends on each patient, so you may even be higher than that based on your symptoms.

(6:00) I am a healthy female on estrogen/prog cream & test for 4 months. Everything has improved except my libido. My DHEA was low-normal. Will taking DHEA help?? I am also on NDT for thyroid.

After menopause, all hormones decrease, including DHEA. Studies have shown that in women with low levels of DHEA after menopause, a DHEA supplement can create positive effects in terms of libido. DHEA is a precursor to other hormones like estrogen or testosterone. Yes, this could be beneficial to supplement with DHEA.

(10:00) I'm almost 47. Had a FULL hysterectomy on 12/23. Do you have some sort of guideline of where my hormones should be at this stage? The hysterectomy relieved SO many issues for me, but I know I'm not optimal.

This would first require getting bloodwork to see where the levels are so that we could create a game plan based on the numbers. You could still be cycling, or menopausal. Based on symptoms and bloodwork, this can give a handle on where everything is at.
