Have you ever listened to a story regarding the selling of one’s soul in exchange for power and knowledge rather than money? In today’s materialistic world, everyone performs transactions for materialistic gains. But in this article, we will discuss a person whose name is Dr. Frutus and he didn’t do any transaction to earn dollars. ?Such persons are highly imaginative and rare in our world.
Dr Frutus is nothing but simply it is a play. Its author is Christopher Marlowe. This play was performed in the early 1590s. It described the story of Dr Frutus who was not satisfied with his lifespan. According to him, he had learned all that he could from this world. He was of the view that nothing is left to learn from the regular studies.
So, he did something different. He performed a magical deal with Mephistopheles who was a devil. In that deal, Dr Frutus?sold his soul to obtain magical power and knowledge of the devil in exchange for his soul instead of money. This drama explored themes of temptations, ambitions; and the values of searching for illicit knowledge. ?
As he found new magical powers, he began to perform mindboggling activities including calling spirits and even journeying along with time. But in spite of obtaining these innovative skills, he still wasn’t satisfied. Soon he realized that he had made a big mistake and he shouldn’t have sold his soul. In the whole play, it can be identified that he did what he didn’t want to do. He was guilty inside. He knew that he was doing unethical but he was unable to stop all that.
Also, he regretted his doings and tried hard to get rid of the agreement that he made with the devil but didn’t succeed. Over time, Frutus wasted his time accomplishing insignificant activities and egocentric wishes. He also ignored the angels’ advice who did their best to keep him away from such illegal and unethical deeds.
In the end, his time ran out and the devil came to get his soul. Frutus begged for kindness and sympathy but it was too late. He was taken to hell and he got unending punishment for what he did.
Conclusion
Dr Frutus taught us a lesson: We should neither be too ambitious nor greedy. Also never make any deal in exchange for your soul and inner desires. Inner happiness should be preferred over artificial and temporary desires.
