Dr. Charles Whitney on Oral Systemic Connection & the Bale/Doneen Method, Part 3
Bryan McLelland, DDS, BSC
Owner and Surgeon at Liberty Oral and Facial Surgery
We, as dentists, need to learn the language and the culture of medicine. For that, he has referred and generously offered access to his website. If you go to 3rderadentistry.com, he has a bunch of audio programs that he has done and that he has been a part of that will help us learn the language and the communication skills that we need to talk to our physicians to be taken seriously.
Everybody should go and make that a part of their mission. I know that this group, the group that's listening right now, will do this. You guys are already dental freaks, and you will be the ones to do this. This message is really for you guys. You are into what you do. You care deeply. You educate yourself and you will be the ones going and watching these things, and learning how to communicate with our physicians, and then really communicating with our physicians and literally saving lives.
I had my carotid scanned. The tech was there. Of course, they cannot diagnose. Does that sound familiar or what? Right? They do not have the authority to diagnose. Fortunately, they didn't see any plaques. The official reading will come here in the next couple of weeks. The name of the company that did this was Vasolabs, so cool. They'll also measure the artery wall thickness. Now, I'll give you an update once I get what that report is, and let you know how much longer you can expect podcasts for before I drop over of cardiovascular disease. I hope it's many, many, many, many, many more years.
Dr. Whitney was kind enough to give out his email address for all of those that were attending but also to all of you. His email address is [email protected]. You can also go to his practice website which is rhslivewell.com. This was a fascinating and just super important topic. I'm super excited about some of the stuff he was talking to me about. He actually talked about having a physician as a part of a dental practice, being hired by the doctor, and maybe a nurse practitioner, and having this model that integrates and maybe screens for these inflammatory markers and follows this Dale, pardon me, Bale/Doneen protocol for a fee, and really just allows our patients to see if they have these systemic signs of oral inflammation from, not just a dental perspective, but also from a body-wide perspective with a corresponding blood test, this CIMT ultrasound.
Keep in mind that this is different than a carotid Doppler. Carotid Doppler just shows flow. This is distinctly different and a much more specific and sensitive test than the carotid Doppler. Don't be fooled by the carotid Doppler. It's a useful tool. Dr. Whitney wasn't shooting that test down, but this is much more specific particularly for preventive care, which is what we're looking for. Let's find evidence of disease before they're systemic and significant health implications. Let's catch it before, intervene and reverse these plaques, make the soft ones into mature plaques and reduce the size, reduce the obstruction, et cetera, et cetera.
Fantastic topic. I wish you guys were there. For those of you that were there, thank you so much for coming. I always joke that it'll be a very boring and lonely place if it was just me and my team at these events. Thanks for coming. Everybody take time out and plan to come to the next event.
