After a life-threatening stroke (1998) and Alzheimer's diagnosis (2000), Dr. Chand was self-inspired to identify his silent and apparent risk factors (comorbidities) and to rediscover the secret of slowing, even reversing, the biological aging of his brain. These lifestyle changes (simple steps) are so easy that anyone can incorporate them into retirement and preretirement life stages.?

?

ON Mother's Day, I dedicate this brief minireview to all moms, especially my mom, who left me at age 60 (perhaps died prematurely of a heart attack). Most women and men can reduce the risk of cardiovascular and brain diseases (Dr. Neal Barnard, 1). ?Estimated 47 million Americans live with preclinical Alzheimer’s (5; considering all risk factors/comorbidities, this may be a low estimate). An estimated 32 million are women. Ladies and gentlemen (even with a family history or genetic risks), it is not your destiny (Dr.?Neal Barnard).

?

Self-motivation and self-determination?and drive to live healthier and happier in retirement for a long time are the keys to success.?Adherence?is "the degree to which the person's behavior corresponds with the agreed self-recommendations" of 90-100% (1). You will be surprised by clinical outcomes- biomarkers and energy levels and sharper memories. Trust Dr. Neal Barnard, the most honest American psychiatrist, and functional nutrition expert.?

?

Dr. Chand's secret for slowing the biological aging of the brain and body:

?

1.??Remember the 4 Cs: the color of urine, stool consistency (ease of emptying), circumference of your waistline, and color of your plates.

?

?

2.??Intermittent fasting for 16 h on most days.

?

3.??Thirty to Ninety minutes of?yogic practices?(4) or any other physical activity under a fasting state would help all seniors. You can customize Life in Yoga’s practices (4) to your needs, liking, and schedule.?

?

4.??Improve the quality of sleep: Improve sleep hygiene. Reduce or limit sleep medications.

?

?

Stretching, yawning, and meditative practices before bedtime could help.

?

Beat dehydration: Improve brain circulation.

Sipping 300-400 ml of magnesium-rich (160-325 mg) hot drink in the evening improves sleep duration and glymphatic functioning. It may cause awakening from AD (2, clinical trial of n=1).?More clinical research is warranted to find individual variabilities, optimal doses, the timing of dosing of magnesium drinks, etc. The keen observations by the caregivers can be a great asset in finding the safe and effective dosing of magnesium drinks (hot or warm drinks).

?

5.??Delayed BRUNCH- optimize gut microbiota growth and nutrition (1): We are what we feed our complex and diverse multidirectional ecosystem in the digestive system (colon).

?

·?????Include one or two oz of resistant starch (7)

·??????Greens??spinach, lettuce, long green beans, broccoli, Swiss chard, etc.

·?????Roots- potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, turnips, onions, etc. ?

·?????Whole grains- rice and a slice of 21 grains of bread

·?????Beans- soaked, drained, and well-cooked Moong dal and black beans. Use Ayurvedic “seasoning” for beans, greens, and whole grains (3).

·?????Fruits- avocado, olives, berries, mango, pears, etc.

·?????Nuts- rich in minerals and natural vitamins, and fats.?

·?????Seeds -pumpkin, chia, or flax seeds (5-15 g).

·?????Lemon peel: roasted/steamed, and it is an excellent source of pectin (our GM >100 trillion. I Love it)

?

6.??Afternoon ritual: 30-60 min of power nap if needed; gardening (bending, turning, and twisting the torso, all joints); aquatic yoga- the gentle movement of all joints (6); or mild dog walking for 30-60 minutes.

?

7.??Use a hearing aid as soon as your hearing is impaired. Avoid infections -consider vaccinations or ayurvedic cooking.

?

8.??Remain connected with people, pets, and plants-

Teach or learn yoga classes, carpentry, gardening, sports, reading, writing, knitting, IT, learn Sanskrit, or any other language, etc. ?

9.??Early identification at preclinical stages and mitigation of the risk factors would reduce significant suffering in the near or distant future.

Note: I gave up animal proteins (ultra-processed foods), dairy, alcohol, wine, beer, artificial sweeteners, soda, etc., in 2000 after my AD declaration by Neurologist (Thank you, Dr. Neal Barnard, for being a great mentor and honest opinion provider, is challenging to find).?

Women- please consider having an endocrinology assessment in the 30-70s. Reducing the use of foods rich in saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol, and casein and reducing the excessive use of cosmetics, chemicals, and cooking ware may decrease the risk of AD.

Challenges: ALL psychiatrists and neurologists must guide people with a high risk of preclinical Alzheimer’s (5) and recently diagnosed with AD (~15 hundred today) to Dr. Neal Barnard and Dr. Chand (an AD-awakened neuroscientist and holistic community servant). ?USDA needs to mandate that most food stamp (SNAP) money should be spent on healthier foods to STOP the bankruptcy of our great nation.
