DPW June - Tay Road Bridge gantry views

Bridge views, cruise ships, and construction in Dundee

1 - Tay Road Bridge Tour

Protective pontoon viewed from gantry of Tay Road Bridge
Looking down at the protective pontoon

I had another tour of the Tay Road Bridge this month and an unexpected surprise was a few minutes on the gantry. The gantry is used to inspect the underside of the bridge so it gives some unusual views of the bridge and Dundee. Here are some of the views, there is a video with commentary at the end of this newsletter.

2 – The Eden Project gets planning approval

Planning approval was granted on on Monday 17th of June but remedial work has already started with lots of red and white barriers and there is heavy machinery moving soil in this video you can see a machine with rollers crushing the soil. A new timelapse from 25th of June.

3 - Bell Street Car Park

All the external concrete struts have been removed and scaffolding has been erected within the spiralling ramps. This car park is 50 years old and the concrete was beginning to show its age so it was a case of refurbishment or demolition, thankfully funding was secured (£14.4 Million from the UK government levelling up fund) so it will be transformed into a green travel hub with space to charge 350 electric vehicles, car share spaces, and e-bike hire. There will be a large PV solar array and battery storage system on the roof of the hub.

There are also plans for a network of active travel corridors leading to the transport hub. The Bell Street multi-storey car park was built in 1974 beside Abertay University in brutalist style. The term brutalism derives from the French phrase ‘béton-brut’ - “raw concrete”

4 – Cruise ships return to Dundee

You wait two months for a cruise ship then two come in the same week. Azamara Onward brought passengers to a Dundee on Monday and Sea Cloud Spirit on Wednesday. I thought Azamara Onward was small with 650 passengers but Sea Cloud Spirit had only 130.

A three part 10x speed timelapse of Sea Cloud Spirit departing.

The top of the main mast is 57.9 metres above the waterline. There is no room for a swimming pool but it does have a Finnish sauna, spa, beauty parlour, hairdresser, library, restaurant, a fitness area with an ocean view and a lounge with a Steinway grand piano. The stern mast is also a funnel for its engine which was used for travelling along the Tay Estuary

5 – Work has begun on the new phase of the refurbishment at the former Department of Work and Pensions

Scaffolding has surrounded the former Job Centre on the corner of Gellatly Street for nearly a year, recently a "pop up" crane appeared and now work has begun on steel frame of the new structure behind the former Job Centre. The completed building will have?five storeys and 49 flats, 32 one-bedroom flats, 14 with two bedrooms and three with three bedrooms. Hillcrest will be the landlord for these flats. This former Job Centre was closed in 2011

6 – Is someone supporting France in the Euros at James Thomson House?

(Look at the colours of the cherry pickers though you would need to in JT House to see the colours in the right order). Worker has now started on the outer skin of this new building.

Phase 2 of site 6 will be similar to Agnes Husband House next door with five floors of Grade A office space (51,600 square feet/ about 4,800 square metres) above retail units on the ground floor. This £26 million development is expected to be completed in 2026. James Thomson House is named after James Thomson (1852–1927). He was a City Engineer, City Architect, and Housing Director.

Thanks for sharing your coverage of our gantries. They're key to keeping the bridge well maintained. These ones have had a long service life and are due to be renewed next financial year.
