DPRK state media show a Hwasong-15 -not a Hwasong-17 or a solid-propellant ICBM

Yesterday, the DPRK launched an ICBM into the Sea of Japan on a lofted trajectory. I wrote in a post that the performance (a maximum altitude of 5700 km, a range of 900 km) was within the capabilities of the Hwasong-15, which is an ICBM they first launched in November of 2017. Today, Korean Central Television showed launch footage (courtesy of Dr. Tomohiko Kawaguchi) and the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) released still images. These indeed show a Hwasong-15, so yesterday's launch probably was a Hwasong-15.

There is no guarantee, though. It's clear that this isn't footage of the first launch of the Hwasong-15, because that took place in darkness. However, they likely launched a Hwasong-15 during daylight hours on March 24 of last year. They never released footage of that launch and, instead, pretended that it was a larger Hwasong-17. And they may have repeated this trick in November.

Bottom line: the Hwasong-15 flew successfully at least once, with other probable flights in March and perhaps in November 2022, as well, and again yesterday, and we still do not know whether they have successfully flown a Hwasong-17.
