Doyin Richards shares his approach to creating a mindset for greater impact, and it's about to get sustainable
"I decided to channel my energy into doing something that would put a dent in the universe." In this week's You've Got This, author and speaker Doyin Richards discusses his journey to creating the Anti-Racism Fight Club?, why anti-racism is not a spectator sport, and guidance for those who want to increase the impact of their speaking or presenting. Don't miss his answers below, along with announcing our next guest, CEO of Happier and author Nataly Kogan.
Victoria: "Can you tell us about your career journey?"
Doyin: "I spent many angry days after George Floyd was murdered, but once that subsided, I decided to channel my energy into doing something that would put a dent in the universe. I leveraged my 20+ years of training and development experience along with my lifetime of being an anti-racist Black person to create workshops, keynote speeches, consultations and more. In a very short time, my Anti-Racism Fight Club? has blown up in popularity with tens of thousands of members ranging from C-suite employees to kindergarteners and everyone in between, and I feel honored to be the 'go-to' anti-racism expert for many corporations and school districts across America. Even LinkedIn is currently?running a commercial?about my work, which is an amazing endorsement for what I bring to the table. It’s only going to get better from here."
Victoria: "As HARIC (Head Anti-Racist In Charge) for the Anti-Racism Fight Club?, you've led workshops for thousands of people, from students to senior executives. What are some of the key principles you hope participants take away from the experience?"
Doyin: "There are too many to list here, but the primary takeaway is that anti-racism is not a spectator sport. The days of being quietly 'not racist' are over, and we need everyone to get into the fight against racism. I call it the?ANTI-RACISM FIGHT CLUB?, but this isn’t a physical fight that I ask my clients to engage in — it’s a fight with their hearts, minds, and souls. It’s a fight to stand up at school board meetings and demand that children are taught the ugly truth about America history to ensure it’s not repeated. It’s a fight to demand racial micro-aggressions be called out and properly disciplined in the workplace. It’s a fight to ensure our communities are as welcoming to the BIPOC community as possible. And so much more.
The key is to create the proper mindset so people don’t erroneously believe that racism will simply go away on its own. 400+ years on this land has proven that approach doesn’t work, and I’m here to lead the charge to create something that will end racism forever. However, it’s important to note that my facilitation style isn’t for everyone. In other words, if you’re looking for a traditional 'buttoned-up' Human Resources type training, then I’m not your guy. I’m opinionated, brash, and I tell it like it is — and quite frankly many of my clients in corporations and schools love it, because we need more people willing to facilitate uncomfortable conversations."
Victoria: "What advice would you have for those who want to become more impactful speakers or presenters?"
Doyin: "Confidence is everything, and sometimes that confidence should be irrational. For example, I walk into any and every room with the unwavering belief that I’m the best anti-racism facilitator and speaker on the planet. Am I?truly?the best anti-racism facilitator and speaker on the planet? Probably not, but it doesn’t matter?— the only thing that matters is what I believe, and then the universe takes care of the rest.

"If you look at the greats in any field, the one thing that sets them apart from the others is that same unwavering belief. As soon as doubt creeps in, you’ve lost. People always say, 'I’ll believe it when I see it' when in reality the opposite is true, “You’ll see it when you believe it."
If you don’t believe in yourself, how will you expect others to? Own your greatness all day, every day."
