Downtown In Business is the reason I changed our business name...

Back in December 2015 I attended the DIB launch event for Birmingham. It was held in the dizzy heights of the Champagne Bar at Marco's 15 floors up and it was photographed by the "social butterfly" Jas Sansi.

Little did I know it would be the catalyst to change our business name.

On all the tables were copies of 'The Big Black Book' and I was leafing through the pages looking at all the businesses within. It struck me that my business would probably never appear in there. We were called Kimberley-Jane Design. In this book I was looking at the awards section and I thought someone who looks like a sole trader, with a name like ours, will never be nominated for an award with DIB. We just look too small.

KJ Design will never feature there. It's too small and I can't compete against those 'proper' businesses.

Kimberley-Jane Design did win awards though, so this way of thinking may have been floored, but I just knew it had a ceiling. Following the name change I've talked a lot about the trials and tribulations we went through to accomplish this but I've never shared where it stemmed from. That BLACK BOOK!

I showed a copy to my business confident (who is actually my Dad, sssshhhh, I totally know what I'm doing) and realised that it was time to change our name to something that reflected us better. The team had grown and was no longer just me. Time to bite the bullet.

The fact is, my instincts were right and nearly 20 months later Squibble Ltd will be featured in the Big Black Book. For those who don't know we have been nominated for Digital & Creative Business of the Year. Obviously it would be nice to win but right now I'm celebrating that my instincts were RIGHT and for those who know me, that's enough.

If you would like to nominate us, it would be greatly appreciated but more importantly share my message instead. For those in business - trust your gut and set goals, you will achieve them.

Very inspirational article Kimberley Jane Leary. Following your instincts is a MUST, and you have confirmed it with your experience here. There are always so many things to make you question what you are doing and if its right, people will always want to have their say too. But ultimately there is nothing more confirming than your instincts. Fair play Kim x

Frank Mckenna, Matt Barnsley, Laur Beech, Chris McKenna, Downtown in Business I'm pretty sure you were never aware of the impact DIB has had - but regardless, thank you :-)
