Downtime vs Uptime: Are We Asking The Right Question?

Downtime vs Uptime: Are We Asking The Right Question?

Downtime, Uptime, these are just two phrases or catch words used to describe a period where a vehicle is either unavailable or available for use.

While downtime focuses on the period a vehicle is ‘off road’, Uptime is focused on the period a vehicle is available. Both have the same objective but come from different philosophical standpoints.

I have spent many countless hours debating what is a good or bad view of both Downtime and Uptime, indeed both do have their merits but what gets lost with both is the amount of work it takes to both decrease and increase these measures respectively.

Layered over this is the cost, the cost to the vehicle operator, the management or leasing company to both keep business moving and manage the event respectively.

Dependent on the vehicle operators business, the cost of a working vehicle being unavailable for a day can range from £500 to £1500 per day and more, additionally this does not take into account service level penalties some vehicle operators have in place or the additional costs of replacement vehicles.

We can soon be running into thousands of pounds of cost. Even at £500 a day across a fleet of 50 vehicle with an average vehicle off road period of 1.5 days per year for unplanned maintenance we are looking at a cost of £37,500 in non-budgeted cost, add vehicle rental charges to this and the numbers become eye watering.

What I have always searched for is the most efficient way to manage both downtime and uptime, but software rarely supports this.

Question time:

  1. How many hours have you and your teams poured over reporting to justify what your achievements have been?
  2. How many difficult conversations have you needed to have with customers when you have lost sight of vehicles becoming unavailable?
  3. How many times have you searched for a solution that mitigates the first two questions?

I know I have many times.

That is why Digital INNK developed ViSN.

Our approach and ethic are based on simplicity and transparency ensuring that no event goes unnoticed in a connected digital eco system that provides a vehicle operator with the ability to carry out Vehicle Health Checks on a tailored schedule and intelligently connect these health checks to a repair network before something becomes a problem – REAL TIME.

With real time reporting and 100% knowledge of any event, you really do get the ability to manage both Downtime and Uptime together, which reduces the possibility of vehicles becoming unavailable without your knowledge.
