The Downsides of Ignoring Succession Planning When Hiring

In the fast-paced world of business, having a plan for the future is crucial. One big part of that is making sure you hire folks who can step up when the time comes. But, if you're not thinking about succession planning when you're hiring, it can mess things up big time.
First off, if you don't hire with an eye on the future, you might find yourself in a bit of a pickle when key people retire or unexpectedly leave. Without a bunch of qualified and trained folks ready to take their place, you could end up in a chaotic scramble to fill important roles. That means a rocky period, less productivity, and maybe missing out on good business chances.
And it's not just about filling gaps. Ignoring succession planning in hiring can make your company less adaptable and innovative. New blood often brings in fresh ideas and skills, keeping things moving forward. If you're not being smart about hiring, your company might get stuck, using outdated methods and struggling to keep up with the ever-changing business world.

Plus, not thinking about succession planning when hiring can be a real downer for your current team. They might feel overlooked or undervalued if they don't see any effort in helping them grow within the company. That can lead to more people leaving and taking their know-how with them.
On top of that, an unprepared succession plan can mess up the quality of leadership. Tossing someone into a leadership role without proper training can lead to bad decisions and a drop in how well the company does overall. That lack of readiness can shake stakeholder confidence, messing up relationships with clients, partners, and investors.
In the end, not hiring with succession planning in mind is a big mistake. It messes with your company's stability, kills innovation, sours employee morale, and messes up the quality of leadership. To keep your company strong, you've got to mix smart hiring with succession planning, making sure there's a crew of capable folks ready to step up when needed.

1 年Great article Andy Brookes. I often think Succession Planning in an organisation is a bit like getting round to writing a Will in your personal life....very often it's something that can be batted into the long grass as you can think ' oh there's plenty of time before I need to think about that'! ...but as the article suggests, it's all about future-proofing your organisation and strategic planning....Life can be SO like a game of chess at times!!!
