Sustainable Innovation
Sustainable materials, tech, experiences and art are transforming industries with eco-friendly alternatives created through advanced technologies. These renewable, recyclable, and biodegradable materials offer opportunities to reduce waste and conserve resources while enhancing performance. Let's explore how sustainable innovations are shaping a greener future by blending technology, art, and innovative thinking.
Eco Interiors: Kempegowda International Airport 'The Garden City'
Kempegowda International Airport's new Terminal 2 in Bengaluru, designed by SOM, features a pioneering bamboo structure. This sustainable terminal blends nature with advanced architecture, incorporating lush interior planting, exterior gardens, and natural materials like brick and bamboo. Aiming to handle 25 million new visitors, the design offers a tranquil, immersive experience reminiscent of walking through a garden.
Highlights include bespoke bamboo elements, hanging gardens, and Mediterranean plants. Terminal 2 is pre-certified LEED Platinum, emphasising sustainability and wellness, with a design accommodating future expansions and seamless passenger flow.
VivaTech 2024
At VivaTech 2024 in Paris, tech companies showcased AI solutions to address food and water waste. Too Good To Go, with 95 million users, introduced an AI tool for grocery retailers to minimize food waste by analysing data on prices, consumption patterns, and seasonality. Chief Commercial Officer Julie Johansen emphasised their "win-win-win" approach: savings for users, profits for the company, and environmental benefits.
Despite heavy financing in Green Tech, experts caution against greenwashing and highlight the challenge of measuring environmental impact. Start-ups like Tenchijin use AI to reduce water waste, and Bioteos offers micro-algae air purifiers. Major companies like Huawei also promote green tech, focusing on biodiversity and environmental protection.
Pioneering Sustainable Construction with CarbonCraft
Tejas Sidnal, founder of CarbonCraft, is revolutionising the construction industry with sustainability. Inspired by nature and his studies in design and architecture, Tejas sought eco-friendly building methods. After studying in London and working in China, he questioned the industry's polluting practices.
CarbonCraft recycles waste carbon from tire factories to create beautiful, carbon-neutral floor tiles, raising awareness about climate change. Tejas champions a circular economy, where products have no end of life, and his innovative solutions are leading the way to a more sustainable future.
Chigubhu Lantern: Illuminating Rural Zimbabwe with Solar Power
Aluwaine Tanaka Manyonga created the Chigubhu Lantern, a solar-powered LED light made from recycled plastic bottles and electronic waste. Inspired by his own challenges in rural Zimbabwe, he has reused over 2,000 plastic bottles and 12,000 LED chips, providing sustainable lighting and reducing waste. Partnering with seven schools, he offers lanterns and training in electronics and renewable energy. This initiative has improved students' grades and aims to inspire future eco-entrepreneurs.
