Down To Earth Execution

During this week’s roundtable, we further pursued the topic of down to earth execution, versus bubble behavior, and spoke with Tim Hentschel, CEO at HotelPlanner and Meetings.com, who has bootstrapped his company to $25M in revenue, growing 20% y-o-y organically. Tim emphasized our mantra of entrepreneurship = customers + revenues + profits, financing, exit, valuation all being optional. Of course, today’s atmosphere is so frothy that such fundamental-oriented thinking has few takers.

The Beer Exchange
As for the pitches, First up, Rethesh George from Charlotte, NC, pitched The Beer Exchange, a marketplace where craft beer lovers can buy beer from eclectic retailers far away, as well as exchange beers among themselves. Interesting, straightforward concepts. Don’t see why it wouldn’t work, other than poor execution.

Presso
Next Amandeep Bhatia from Pune, India, pitched Presso, also an exchange where Indian consumers can have an on-demand laundry service. It appears that the business will take very little money to get to profitability and further validation, which is the first order of business here.

M-Payments
Then Vandit Patel from Ahmedabad, India, pitched M-Payments, a concept for mobile payments in lieu of cash. In India, this concept may not fly, and to make it fly, there is huge capital risk involved.
