Unleashing Potential: STEM Saturday at R.K. Smith Middle School

On September 28, 2024, Dow Chemical and STEM NOLA joined forces to host a dynamic and engaging STEM Saturday event titled "The Power of Chemistry" at R.K. Smith Middle School in Luling, Louisiana. This free event aimed to inspire and educate students in grades K-12 about the wonders of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) through hands-on activities and interactive learning experiences.

Among the many interactive hands-on STEM activities, participants built and tested their own chemical battery clocks.

Smith Middle School in Luling, Louisiana, participants suited up in lab coats and dove into hands-on activities, including building and testing their own chemical battery clocks. Thanks to the incredible mentorship from 10 dedicated Dow staff members and 58 enthusiastic college volunteers, students were able to learn, create, and explore the wonders of chemistry in a fun and engaging way. At STEM NOLA | STEM Global Action, our mission is to expose, engage, and inspire the next generation of innovators, and events like these are key to building the leaders of tomorrow.

A Day of Discovery and Inspiration

With 172 students representing 74 schools, the event was a resounding success. Among the registrants, 110 were boys and 62 were girls, highlighting a diverse mix of future innovators eager to explore the world of chemistry. Notably, 72% of the participants qualified for the Free or Reduced Lunch program, emphasizing the importance of accessibility and inclusivity in STEM education.

The event was supported by 58 dedicated volunteers, including college students and STEM professionals, who collectively committed an astounding 248.5 hours to mentor and guide the young attendees. This community effort exemplifies the mission of STEM NOLA : to expose, engage, and inspire future innovators, creators, makers, and entrepreneurs through STEM-based activities.
