No Doubt About It!

In the fall of 1985 I laid in a hospital bed in my living room with a broken back. We just spent our life savings on a home addition and I told my wife I was quitting my job to venture out on my own. To help her get through the shock, I tried to sound as confident as possible.
But inside I was asking myself these types of questions: (See if any of them sound familiar to you.)
Did I mention my wife had our second child just 10 days earlier?
While putting on a brave, confident face, I had a ton of self-doubt: The poison of dreams.
? It’s the endless loop of, “what ifs.”
? The never-ending second-guessing ourselves.
? Constantly comparing ourselves to others.
? The endless loop of negative self-talk that spirals us downward.
I’m confident you’ve faced some of this. It’s how most humans are wired.
If you are to succeed, at anything, you need to put all these thoughts in a bottle and put a cork in. Here’s a few things that helped me, and I hope they help you:
First, you need to be honest with yourself. Know that things can fall apart. Your business can fail. You might not get promoted. Maybe a new sales strategy isn’t working.
Next, verbalize and write down the worst possible thing that can happen. Getting it all out there is a relief and calming. Plus, odds are it won’t be as bad as the credit your mind gave it.
Then, have a Plan B and write it down. Pretend you’ll have to use it. You may!
Finally, develop a self-talk script that interrupts the self-doubt thought pattern. Write it down. Voice record it. Read and listen to it first and last thing in the day.
Here’s a few examples you can include in your script:
So, here’s your Action Item and Mission, should you decide to accept it: Doubting yourself about succeeding at something that’s staring you in the face? Put any of the ideas I mentioned into action and stare back at it knowing you’ll do just fine.
And, if nobody else tells you, I will. You CAN do it. And I’m cheering for you.
BTW - The business I worried about went on for 22 years, earned a spot in the INC 500, put four kids though college, and provided a great, albeit rollercoaster life, for our family. You got this.
