Double-Spacing on LinkedIn: What's the point?
If you want me to answer honestly, I greatly enjoy reading double-spaced posts. And I hope you read past the first line and allow me to explain.
THEY WORK. But only if they are properly formed.
The double-spacing takes advantage of the display format LinkedIn uses, coupled with the natural audience of LinkedIn users (ie: business-minded networkers as a general majority). The format allows a few things you simply cannot achieve with a traditional paragraph, and they allow a story to be told in a much different way.
Do I like reading 100's of these posts every single day? No, but only because there are many who have taken to the format without understanding the purpose of it. They're truly pointless if there is no message to them.
Simply put, organizing thoughts in point form harnesses that little voice in your head that is reading out the words on your screen.
It pulls you in and leaves you wanting more.
The words grab and pull, you can't help but feel them resonate.
Your internal voice punctuates that final period, with force.
See what I did there? That's the whole purpose of the double-spaced format. Like it or not, it creates a dynamic readability that other social networks don't have the attention span for. You're not going to find them on Twitter. You'll barely see them on Facebook because text doesn't have a strong conversion rate unless it's paired with powerful media. Same story on Instagram (obviously media dominates over anything else there).
The moral here? There's power in every story, but sometimes you need to think about how to tell that story. And until we can find a platform where we can all play nice on, LinkedIn will have its double-spaced posts, Facebook will have its memes, Twitter will have Donald Trump, and Instagram will have everyone's lunch.

6 年I have little idea what you're talking about. From the title, I figured you were going to talk about using double spaces after periods. I soon gathered you were talking about double line spacing, but you lost me around the time you wrote, "There are many who have taken to the format without understanding the purpose of it." Next thing I know, you're talking about organizing your thoughts in point form. So the purpose of double line spacing is to present thoughts in point form? Whatever.

6 年Sorry Austen, I totally disagree. This is classic programming arrogance. Either they can’t fix it or some fool decided it was the right thing and everyone suffers. Disruptive technology eventually disrupts itself by stupidity like this.
