Technology—A Blessing or a Burden??
Technology has transformed our workplaces, enabling flexibility, collaboration, and innovation. In Australia, sectors like healthcare, education, and remote work industries have seen particularly significant impacts. For example, healthcare professionals now rely on telehealth systems, which, while improving access, have also introduced challenges around managing patient loads and constant connectivity.
Yet, as my work with the World Federation for Mental Health reveals, it’s also a double-edged sword. Globally, we’re seeing an “always-on” culture where the boundaries between work and life have blurred.
Here in Australia, this challenge is palpable. Employees report feeling tethered to their devices, with constant notifications creating a sense of hyper-vigilance.
The result? Increased stress, disrupted sleep, and growing mental health strains.
Movements like the “right to disconnect” legislation aimed to restore balance, to provide much-needed relief. But, let’s face it, our Right to Disconnect legislation is a poor, watery version of what could have been useful!
Leaders play a pivotal role in managing technology’s impact on their teams. It’s not just about implementing policies; it’s about setting expectations and modelling behaviours that prioritize wellbeing. When leaders respect boundaries, encourage downtime, and use technology to enhance—not control—work, they create healthier, more sustainable environments.
