For instance, saying something like "We aim to increase our revenue by 10 times this year!". We plan to introduce 50 new products by the second quarter!" If you have, congratulations. You've had a taste of the world of stretch goals.

Stretch goals are all the rage these days. They've been praised as the ingredient behind groundbreaking innovations and disruptions in various industries. The idea is to set a target that will shake up your team from their comfort zone and inspire action. Suddenly everyone is motivated to think and achieve what seemed unattainable.

It's not just a theory. It has actually worked for some figures. Google for example has centered its identity around "moonshots " chasing dreams like self-driving cars and life extension. Elon Musk is renowned, for his goals always aiming high whether he’s revolutionizing the automotive industry or sending rockets into space.

It's no surprise that many leaders feel tempted to emulate this approach. All, who wouldn't want to make a mark on the world by accomplishing something that others deemed impossible? It’s natural for people to want to prove skeptics wrong and leave a lasting mark as a forward thinker.

However the truth is, behind every tale of achieving goals there lies a graveyard of untold failures. Take the case of Marissa Mayer stepping in to lead Yahoo with promises of a revival – that didn't quite go as planned. It turns out that setting and reaching stretch goals involves more than just randomly picking a big number.

The harsh reality is that stretch goals are often misconstrued and misapplied. Many leaders view them as a cure all solution for any issue. Struggling with performance targets? Just set a goal! Want to outpace your rivals? Time for some goal action! Feeling your company culture is lacking? A stretch goal will fix it all!

Yet the truth remains that stretch goals are potent but tricky. Akin to medicine they can have severe repercussions if used incorrectly. Choosing the goal at the wrong moment could lead to demoralization, within your team encourage unethical practices or shortcuts or even result in the downfall of your organization.
