In another case, an English tutoring company faced legal consequences after its AI hiring system rejected older job candidates, discriminating against female applicants over 55 and male applicants over 60. This illustrates how AI can amplify biases present in the training data, reinforcing age, gender, and racial biases.

These examples underscore a common challenge: data bias. AI systems inherit biases from the data they are trained on, emphasising the need for careful data collection, handling, and analysis. Businesses that rely on biased AI systems risk producing inaccurate results, alienating marginalised groups, and eroding public trust. As Gen.AI continues to evolve, it brings vast opportunities but also presents significant challenges. Though we have only begun to explore its full potential, Gen.AI is transforming business operations, CXs, and industries from healthcare to marketing, reshaping value across sectors.

With the barriers to integrating AI now lower than ever, adopting advanced LMs is as simple as an API call. However, the key challenge lies in deploying these systems responsibly, managing biases, and establishing strong governance frameworks to mitigate risks. For organisations, technology companies, it is essential to proactively address AI risks, including bias, and to adopt governance practices that ensure AI benefits without compromising fairness, transparency, or regulatory compliance.

In this rapidly advancing landscape, Executive Management and Board of Directors (BoD) must play a critical role in balancing AI's risks and benefits, protecting consumer and employee interests, and unlocking new value. They need a clear path to assess, monitor, and guide AI adoption within their organisations, ensuring AI technology is both ethically sound and strategically valuable, and unlock new value for their business?


Which are the key AI Risks?

Organisations are eager to leverage Gen.AI to unlock new value, yet these solutions are not turnkey. Addressing key AI risks with a human-centered approach to strategy is essential.

One major risk is AI bias. Since AI models learn from historical data, any existing biases in that data may lead to biased outcomes in AI applications. Carefully curating data, selecting balanced datasets, and continually monitoring outputs can reduce this risk. In hiring, for example, such practices prevent AI from reinforcing existing inequalities, supporting fairness in decision-making.

Another concern is AI hallucination, where models produce convincing but incorrect information. Human oversight plays a vital role in addressing this risk by setting guardrails and selecting suitable models to minimise errors that could impact business decisions.

Transparency is also crucial, particularly with LLMs, which can often function as "black boxes”. By involving humans to review and explain AI-driven insights, businesses can foster trust, ensuring that AI is not simply a mysterious tool but one that employees understand and use confidently. Transparency helps verify that AI models behave as intended, promoting responsible adoption and building organisation-wide trust in AI's role.


What is bias in Artificial Intelligence (AI)?

AI bias occurs when AI systems produce unfair or prejudiced outcomes. For instance, an AI-driven hiring tool trained on historical data might favour male candidates over female ones or show preference based on ethnicity or educational background. This type of bias often reflects the biases embedded in training data, which may include historical stereotypes.

Bias can stem from several sources: the dataset used, the design of the algorithm, or the patterns it generates. For example, if biases in data affect hiring or lending decisions, they can harm reputation and violate ethical standards, leading to both operational and reputation risks.

Accountability Challenges: Due to the limited interpretability of LLMs, assigning responsibility for errors, biased outcomes, or unintended consequences can be difficult.
