The Double Diamond Model.

The Double Diamond Model.

The Double Diamond Model is a model / method that reflects the innovation process. It is also known as the 4D model. In this blog we will dive into it.

What is the double Diamond model?

The model represents the phases (i) Discover, (ii) Define, (iii) Develop, and (IV) deliver. For this reason, the model is also called 4d model. The Double Diamond consist of two "diamonds" each symbolizing a process of diverging (exploring and investigating something) and then converging (making choices and taking action).

The first diamond explores the "problem space". By collecting information (diverging) and defining a design brief (converging), you ensure that the right problem is tackled. The second diamond explores, the "solution space". By devising solution directions (diverging) and developing one or a few promising solutions (converging), you ensure a good validated solution.

Phases of the Double Diamond Model

The Discover phase aims to develop real understanding of/experience with the problem. By delving into the problem as much as possible, allowing different perspectives, and listening and experiencing carefully, you avoid prejudices. In many cases, this simply means spending time with people who are experiencing the problem to be solved.

In this phase you can use the following tools as a researcher: observation, stakeholder diaries, being a key user yourself, surveys, sketches, context mapping, stakeholder, empathize.

The Define phase is intended for defining the design brief. You use the information and experience gained during the discover phase. So here you see the process of diverging and converging in the first diamond.

In this phase you can use the following tools: focus groups, personas, predefined assessment criteria, clustering of post-its / information, customer journey mapping.

The Develope phase is the start of the second diamond. That means we will first diverge again. In this phase we look for as many possible solutions for the design assignment as possible. This is a creative phase where idea generation, combining perspectives, and co-creation are central.

In this phase you can use tools such as: brainstorm, personas, role plays, scenarios, blueprints, prototyping.

In the Deliver phase you will try different solutions on a small scale. You say goodbye to what doesn't work and you continue to develop what does work.

The tools you can use in this phase: phasing, user testing, customer lifecycle map, role play.

It is important to understand that the Double Diamond method is not a linear process. The blue levels indicate that you can go back to the start of the design issue at any time. For example, you can already make and test a very fast prototype in the discover phase. Or, at the end of a carefully completed and completed process, you can start again with a new cycle of discovery because the world is changing rapidly these days.

Relationship to Design Thinking

Going through the Double Diamond is applying Design Thinking. So there isn't really a difference. You can find various Design Thinking processes online, but the Double Diamond can be recognized in all processes. It doesn't matter which process you use as long as you are aware of the fundamental building blocks of a design process. And those fundamental building blocks are beautifully displayed in the Double Diamond.
