The Double Diamond design process

The Double Diamond design process

The Double Diamond?design?process is a well-known framework for problem-solving and innovation.

It consists of four stages: Discover, Define, Develop and Deliver.

Here is an overview:

Discover

The first stage focuses on understanding the problem space and gathering?#insights.

This stage involves divergent thinking. This means generating a wide range of ideas and exploring different possibilities.

Teams gain a deeper understanding of the problem and its context through:

-?#research,

- gathering data and

- interviewing people

The Discover stage needs a mindset of:

- open-mindedness

- curiosity

- a willingness to explore different perspectives

Define

The second stage focuses on agreeing a clear problem statement.

This stage involves convergent thinking. This means narrowing down the possibilities and focusing on a specific direction.

Teams use the insights and data gathered in the Discover stage to identify:

- needs

- painpoints

- desires

The Define stage needs a mindset of:

- focus

- clarity

- a shared statement of the problem

Develop

The third stage focuses on generating solutions and exploring different possibilities.

This stage involves divergent thinking. This means generating a wide range of solution ideas and exploring different possibilities.

Teams use brainstorming, prototyping, and testing to generate and refine potential solutions.

Teams also seek feedback and ensure candidate solutions meet their needs.

This stage needs a mindset of:

- creativity

- experimentation

- a willingness to take risks

Deliver

The final stage focuses on delivering a final solution or product.

This stage involves convergent thinking. This means selecting the preferred solution and refining it for launch.

Teams use data gathered in the Develop stage to refine and complete the solution.

Teams also create a plan for launch. This may involve marketing, distribution and onboarding.

This stage needs a mindset of:

- execution

- attention to detail

- a focus on delivering value

Summary

The Double Diamond #design process is a mental model. It helps teams move from a broad problem space to a specific solution space.

The four stages involve different mindsets, activities, and approaches to problem-solving.

In Product Management, the Problem Space and divergent thinking are the most often neglected.

Value comes form helping someone achieve their desired outcome. BY addressing their needs, pain-points or desires.

By following the Double Diamond process, teams are more likely to create innovative solutions that create value

I really like this, I've mostly used Ideation, Evaluation & Action as my process. I feel like a lot of people probably start the discover process then skip the define and go straight to to developing. The defining piece is really key and would probably save a lot of startups from going head first into a product without understanding the needs and pain points of their target market.
