You may have seen so may articles on how doing one thing or another is essentially killing you if you continue to do it in the long-run.

This is particularly true in the health and fitness industry, one minute it's eating too much red meat is going to significantly be of a detriment to your health, the next minute there is an article telling you that in fact it is eating too many vegetables is going to kill you (this was actually a headline that I saw).

It’s a common theme in the health and fitness world—one day we’re told something is bad for us, and the next, we’re encouraged to embrace it. But the reality is, even the things we take for granted, like oxygen and water, can be harmful in excess.

Breathing too much oxygen over long periods can lead to oxygen toxicity, which can cause damage to the lungs and nervous system. Similarly, drinking excessive amounts of water can result in water intoxication, diluting the sodium in our blood and leading to dangerous imbalances.

So what does this tell you?

It tells you that in essence the dose makes the poison. Take carbs for example. I am an advocate of a low carb, and essentially a low-insulin lifestyle, and I know that if I keep my carb intake low, it will help keep insulin levels low it will help me keep a physique that I aspire to achieve.

This principle applies perfectly to carbohydrates. While I advocate for a low-carb, low-insulin lifestyle to help maintain a lean and healthy physique, the issue isn't necessarily the carbs themselves—it’s the dose. When we consume carbs in excess, especially refined or processed ones, our insulin levels spike repeatedly throughout the day.

Over time, this can lead to insulin resistance, weight gain, and increased risk of chronic conditions like type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Just like too much water or oxygen can harm us, excessive carbohydrates can disrupt our body’s balance. The dose makes the poison, and it’s about finding that sweet spot to support both health and vitality.

How do you find the sweet spot?

Unlike the one-size-fits-all approach, where you're handed a generic target to hit, it’s about understanding your body’s unique needs. Factors like your activity levels, metabolic health, and individual goals all play a role in determining how much carbohydrate is right for you. Instead of rigidly sticking to a number, it’s about listening to your body’s cues—how you feel after meals, how your energy levels fluctuate, and how well you’re able to maintain your health goals.

This personalised approach empowers you to make adjustments that suit your lifestyle, rather than being restricted by cookie-cutter diet plans that fail to take into account the nuances of your life and body.
