Dose 35: The Importance of Diversity & Inclusion in Marketing Teams

We live in a society full of different people from different backgrounds, having different values, and holding different belief systems. For this reason, it’s essential for an organization’s culture to be diverse and inclusive enough to accept all of these differences.

A diverse culture has a number of benefits for the success of an organization, because the more your people feel comfortable and satisfied working with you, the more it leads to their productivity and brings a positive impact on overall performance.?

Not only that, but a diverse team can easily cater to the needs of different consumers they’re communicating with because they’ll be able to relate to them in a more meaningful way.?

Additionally, with marketing becoming more and more transparent and customers demanding a trust factor from every brand they follow, representing diversity is a necessary action. Nearly 46% of consumers report they’ll pay for products and services they trust, with 60% saying they prefer brands with inclusive ads.?

In today’s newsletter, I want to highlight how diversity and inclusion make an impact on your employees as well as customers as a whole.?

Diversity refers to seeking out and recruiting people from marginalized groups that reflect the society and your audience. While inclusion means creating policies that favor every person working in your organization rather than just a select few.?

This doesn’t mean you just need to hire an equal number of male and female or minority and majority group individuals. Rather, it means to actually, authentically accept diversity within your mindset and then apply it in your organization in a way that your culture and every individual in your team represents it.?

Benefits of Diversity & Inclusion for Marketers?

  • Ethnically diverse companies are 35% more likely while gender-diverse companies are 15% more likely to drive higher revenues.?
  • The top 100 of the Fortune 500 companies have more diverse organizations than the rest of the 400.?
  • Brands focused on high-growth are 1.9 times more likely to have diversity and inclusivity-related goals than those with negative growth.?

How to Implement a Diverse Culture??

  • Organize trainings to educate yourself and your team about the importance of diversity and inclusion. And make sure the training you all receive becomes part of your practical operations.?
  • Listen to your team members, especially those who don’t talk a lot. Make sure they don’t feel like they’re being overshadowed or ignored. Sometimes these people observe a lot more about your organization’s practices than those who are more open.?
  • Hire people who come from diverse sets of groups, they’ll see problems within your team with a much newer perspective and point out what you may have been missing out on.?
  • Create policies that encourage diversity in your organization and be proactive about whether they’re being followed so that none of your team members feel left out.?

More than anything, pay attention to your team. Observe where you think change is needed, and implement it to make sure all your team members are satisfied with the operations in your organization. The more diverse your team, the more they can accept each other’s differences. This can also further ensure that your campaigns and strategies for audiences are diverse enough for them to relate to it rather than stagnant.?
