The Do's and Don’ts of Standing Seam: A Quick Guide

A high-quality standing seam roof or facade makes a statement of durability and excellence - if installed and designed correctly. Don't let subpar standing seam ruin your reputation. Here are a few crucial do's and don'ts to ensure a proper design and a quality install. #StandOutWithStandingSeam #QualityMatters #BEMOExpertise??

?

1. DO: Properly position and align halters

Halter set-out is crucial and just a millimetre can be the difference between a beautiful install or a horrific mess. Stick to the tolerances, double-check your distance and string line your halters first.

?

2. DO: Ensure halters are installed the right way

Not all standing seam halters are symmetrical (and yes, there’s a reason!), so check that you are installing your halters the correct way. For BEMO, the capillary channel in the halter should be the opposite way to the capillary channel in the small roll of the standing seam. It’s not about making things complicated; it's about ensuring functionality.

?

3. DO: Use a hand-seaming tool for engaging the first 600mm of each standing seam sheet

The hand seamer is your best friend for starting you off with the correct seam engagement; the powered seaming machine is basically the hand seamer’s assistant. Make sure you give that first 600mm a good squeeze, then send the machine on its way!

?

4. DO: Consult the manufacturer before adding additional components

Solar panels are great and walkways usually a must, but please check with your standing seam provider before you start going on a mad one with seam clamps – as these extra items can affect the integrity of a standing seam system, if not considered correctly.

5.? DON’T: Avoid fixing anything at halter positions

Aluminium needs to be allowed to move freely and anything fixed near a halter is effectively clipping its wings. This can quite easily lead to all sorts of problems like seams popping off and creasing in the sheets. Let the material expand and contract as needed—it will save you headaches later!

?

6. DON’T: Avoid walking in the pan of the standing seam sheets.

Unless you are going for the dented look across your roof, stick to walking on the upstands, as this is the strongest point.

?

7. DON’T: Don’t leave the protective film on painted finishes for too long

We know you want the roof to look perfect for handover, but prolonged exposure to (especially British) weather can cause a change in the adhesive and bake the film on. I can tell you now that if it’s exposed for too long, it’s not coming off and nobody wants to explain that at a handover!

?

8. DON'T: Don’t mix and match tools or components from different manufacturers

Regardless of who’s standing seam system you choose to use; we are not in fact all the same and we do have differences in all of our profiles and products, meaning they are not interchangeable. As I said, we promise none of us do it to be awkward.
