The Do's and Don’ts of Standing Seam: A Quick Designers Guide
As a designer, you can't afford to cut corners when it comes to detailing. Get the inside scoop on best practices for designing standing seam and avoid potential pitfalls with my quick design guide. #StandOutWithStandingSeam #TheDevilIsInTheDetails #BEMOEngineering??
1. DO: Ensure halters are shown correctly
BEMO standing seam halters are not symmetrical (there is a reason!), so?make sure halters are drawn showing the correct direction of lay. The capillary channel in the halter should be opposite to the capillary channel in the small roll of the standing seam. It’s not about making things complicated; it's about ensuring functionality.
2. DO: Ensure component spacing reflects calculations
Pay close attention to ensuring correct distances between components are clearly shown in your section drawings, to ensure the information is bob-on when it comes to installation; halter set-out is critical, for a successful project. All of this information can be found in your project calculations, but just make sure you show it.
3. DO: Include a fixed-point
This tends to get forgotten, yet every project needs one. The type and location of a fixed-point varies between projects, but again this information is all squirrelled in your project calculation pack. All sections should clearly show a fixed-point with an aluminium halter and the specific type/number of fixings required. Put it this way, if it gets installed without a fixed point – you’ve got a BIG problem.
4. DO: Ensure interface details are correct
Interface details can be pretty intricate in part and vary between manufacturers. At BEMO, we have a suite of robust details for you to incorporate into your project and we are more than happy to issue them to you – the best part is, we will even send them in DWG for you to drag and drop in! #Bonus
5.? DO: Issue your details
We know that every project is different, so we are more than happy to cast our eye over your details and provide guidance – Afterall, we are in this together! Its also worth noting, that we do offer extensive design services ourselves – to save you the hassle.

6. DON’T: Don't forget to include important bits of information
There are things in standing seam section drawings that cannot physically be drawn, but definitely need mentioning – insulation and fixing references are perfect examples. Soft insulation will require some compression, so ensure you highlight both the uncompressed and compressed thicknesses; the more detail on the drawings, the better!
7. DON’T: Don't mix and match manufacturers CAD blocks
Regardless of the manufacturer, we all have different systems with various components and profile shapes and if you try and use bits from each manufacturer, you are going to end up with a bit of a mess! All you have to do is drop us a line and we will ping over any required CAD blocks to you – trust me, it will save you having to redo them again later. ?
8. DON'T: Don’t be afraid to ask
Regardless of the manufacturer, I’m fairly certain we all have a common goal; which is to ensure our systems are done right, and I know technical departments can be pretty intimidating, but I promise none of us bite and we are all happy to help!?
By using these quick tips to aid your design, you’ll ensure your standing seam project is drafted to the elite and save headaches when it comes to install. Feel free to reach out, if you have any queries. #BEMOSystems #ExpertTips
