We have all moved onto virtual meetings, owing to the disruption in our world of work. What this means is, all meetings – with colleagues, customers or candidates has gone online. And it is interesting to note almost everyone has adapted to virtual meetings using various digital platforms.
For those who are new to online meetings, here are some quick tips so you can save on the bloopers:
1. Ensure your internet is working fine, move to an area where the signals are strong
2. Practice in advance – set up the work area, lighting, background (area visible on camera)
3. Find a comfortable chair, avoid sitting on a couch as you may tend to slouch.
4. Make sure the room is well lit up and you are facing the light
5. Test the audio / video to check how you sound and look on screen - it will give you an idea of your best angle and build your confidence. You don’t want the camera looking into your nose.
6. Use an external speaker if your mobile/laptop speakers are not loud enough, as this is the single biggest distractor – moving closer to listen, asking multiple times to repeat, etc
7. Dress like you would dress to work
8. Find a quiet place, where you know you won’t get interrupted
9. Login and be prepared ahead of time
10. Warn your housemates if you’re doing a video call; we’ve heard / seen all those awkward scenarios
11. Make eye contact with the camera and not the computer screen. Sit up straight and smile while you speak
12. Do not panic in case of any disruption, just excuse yourself by dropping a chat message or by showing a hand signal for the break, then attend to the issues.
13. Make sure the background does not have anything that may distract the other attendees, especially if you are in an interview

4 年In the current context -Joseph Devasia, I would not mind much on being formal on video calls, we all know that most of us are at home and may not need to create a formal environment, it should not matter to show the genuine side of ours - I wouldn't make much if your child or pet photobombs your meeting or you are casually dressed.
