The Do’s & Don’ts of Asking for References

The Do’s & Don’ts of Asking for References ?

References are persons who can confirm your qualifications for a job based on their insight into your work ethic, skills, strengths, and achievements. Typically, a professional reference is a former employer, client, colleague, teacher, supervisor, etc. When you’re on the shortlist of candidates for a new job, your qualifications are usually very similar to those of the other applicants.

Do Choose the Right References

Do Choose the Right References is one of the most important tasks when job hunting is rounding up, references can attest to your qualifications and abilities to do a job. Your references can help you make a compelling case as to why you’re the best candidate for the job, but a less-than-enthusiastic endorsement can knock you off an employer's list of candidates.

Don’t List Your References Directly on Your Resume

Many job seekers still include references directly on their resumes. Additionally, listing your references without their permission can be seen as unprofessional and may harm your relationship with them. When preparing your references document, make sure to include the names, titles, companies, phone numbers, and email addresses of your references.

Do Have a List Ready

Select people who can speak positively about your work and character. These could be former colleagues, supervisors, mentors, or clients. While most employers will ask for your references after the interview process, it's a good idea to bring a printed copy of your reference list to the interview just in case. This shows that you are prepared and professional.

Don’t Offer Your References Right Away

One must be mindful of the hiring manager or recruiter's time and not overwhelm them with unnecessary information. In general, it's best to wait until the hiring manager or recruiter specifically requests your references before providing them. This shows that you respect their time and that you understand the hiring process. ?

Do Keep Your References Up to Date

Always keep an updated list of 3 to 4 references on file. Just as it’s important for your references to know what you’ve been up to, so too should you keep tabs on them. Provide your references with an updated copy of your resume and any other relevant information they may need.

Don’t Forget to Thank Your References

It is always a good idea to take the time to show appreciation and encourage positive relationships with those who have provided references for you. Remember, networking and maintaining good relationships with past employers, teachers, and co-workers can be beneficial for your future career endeavors. So, it's always a good idea to show your appreciation and maintain positive relationships with those who have helped you along the way.

Hopefully your references will have glowing comments and you will be days away from a new beginning. By Nisha Pant Recruitment Executive at Jobs Sniper Pvt. Ltd.?
