How in your capacity are you trying to address the dearth of women in African tech??
In my capacity, I am addressing these challenges through several targeted initiatives :
- I actively mentor young women who are interested in technology. By providing guidance, support, and encouragement, I help them navigate their early careers and build confidence in their abilities. I participate in workshops and events designed to inspire girls to pursue careers in technology. I recently led a coding workshop for high school girls, where I shared my journey and offered hands-on experience with coding projects.
- I advocate for gender diversity and inclusion within my organization and the broader tech community. This includes pushing for policies that support work-life balance and equal opportunities for women.
- As an active community builder, I participate in initiatives that create a supportive environment for women in tech. I help organize networking groups and meetups where women can join to share their voices, experiences, challenges, and resources. These platforms foster connection, support, and growth among women in the tech industry.
- Lastly, I am committed to supporting educational programs and scholarships aimed at increasing the number of women in tech, particularly those from underserved communities. By providing access to education and resources, we can help bridge the gender gap in technology.?
What policy interventions do you think can grow the tech ecosystem in Kenya and Africa??
Several policy interventions can help grow the tech ecosystem in Kenya and Africa:
- Education and Training: Governments should invest in STEM education and vocational training programs to develop a skilled workforce. This includes updating curricula to reflect current industry needs and providing resources for teachers and students.
- Infrastructure Development: Investment in infrastructure, particularly in rural areas, is crucial. This includes expanding internet connectivity, improving power supply, and building tech hubs and innovation centers.
- Funding and Support: Policies that provide funding and incentives for startups and tech entrepreneurs can drive innovation. This includes grants, tax incentives, and access to affordable loans.
- Regulatory Framework: Developing a clear and supportive regulatory framework that encourages innovation while protecting consumer rights is essential. This includes data protection laws, intellectual property rights, and cybersecurity regulations.
- Public-Private Partnerships: Encouraging collaboration between the government, private sector, and academia can lead to more effective solutions and the sharing of resources and expertise.
