Doris Ratego: Challenges facing the African technology ecosystem

  • In general, what does the African tech ecosystem need to thrive??

The tech ecosystem in Africa needs several key elements to thrive. First, robust infrastructure such as reliable internet connectivity and access to modern technology is imperative. Second, investment in education and training programs to develop a skilled workforce is crucial. Third, there is also a need for increased funding and support for startups and tech entrepreneurs, as well as policies that encourage innovation and protect intellectual property. Lastly, fostering a collaborative environment where stakeholders - such as government, private sector and academia- can work together is essential.

What major challenges affect the tech ecosystem in Africa?

  • Talent: There is a shortage of skilled tech professionals due to limited access to quality education and training. Further, many talented individuals migrate to other regions for better opportunities, exacerbating the talent gap.
  • Infrastructure: Inadequate infrastructure, such as unreliable internet and power supply, hampers the growth of tech businesses. Rural areas are particularly affected, limiting the reach of technology.
  • Resources: Funding for startups and tech ventures is limited. Many entrepreneurs struggle to secure the necessary capital to scale their businesses. Access to advanced technology and research facilities is also limited.
  • Regulation: Inconsistent and outdated regulations can stifle innovation. There is a need for clear, supportive policies that promote the growth of the tech sector while protecting consumer rights.
  • Market Access: Many tech companies face difficulties in accessing broader markets due to logistical challenges and trade barriers.

What challenges in your experience do women in tech face??

  • First, bias and stereotypes continue to be significant barriers. Gender biases often result in women being underestimated or overlooked for leadership roles and key projects.?
  • Second, the lack of female representation in tech is a considerable challenge. With fewer women in the field, there is a noticeable absence of role models and mentors for aspiring female technologists.?
  • Third, balancing career and family responsibilities is another significant hurdle. Many cultures still expect women to take on primary caregiving roles, which can make it challenging to balance these responsibilities with a demanding tech career.?
  • Fourth, workplace culture can also be a deterrent for women in tech. Women may encounter a culture that is not inclusive or supportive, impacting their confidence and career progression.?
