Dorie Clark on thinking longterm: "Busyness is self-imposed."
Jessi Hempel
Host, Hello Monday with Jessi Hempel | Senior Editor at Large @ LinkedIn
We’re 18 months into this drastically different way of doing work, and a lot of us have run ourselves ragged. We’ve gotten accustomed to making short-term decisions--the kind of decisions you make when you don’t know what things are going to be like next month, or next week, or even tomorrow.
Even without a global pandemic to shorten our time horizons, thinking long term takes discipline. But it pays off. We make decisions differently—about everything from who to help out to what conference to attend to what job to take. We are more clear.
So today, we invited Dorie Clark on to the show to talk about expanding our horizons. Dorie’s got a new book. It’s called The Long Game: How to be a long-term thinker in a short-term world.?
Dorie invites us to reimagine how we approach things. To slow down and think about what matters for us in the very long run.?You can listen below, or find the episode here .
???Office Hours: Let's talk about it.
This episode reminded me of advice I got early in my career from an editor, Adam Lashinsky . When I worked at Fortune, I used to write short pieces for online audiences, and also report and work on long pieces for Fortune Magazine. Adam always told me to save my best energy for the long pieces, that they would be more memorable and always do more for my career than the shorter pieces. It was so hard! But he was right. I got my next job because of the pieces I’d worked on for months at a time, not minutes at a time.
Do you have a version of this in your life? This week on Office Hours, we’ll be talking about what it really means to think long term. We’ve had some conversations about planning, but this is really more about goal setting. We’ll go live from the LinkedIn News Page at 3p ET.?

???From the archives: Reinventing yourself with Dorie Clark
If you enjoyed my conversation with Dorie, check out our earlier episode. In this one, she explained she unpacks the notion of a side hustle, and helps us think smartly about developing an alternative career path:
Hi Dorie Clark, I just listened to your "Reinventing yourself with Dorie Clark" podcast on LinkedIn's Hello Monday with Jessi Hempel. I loved the rebranding ideas! I'm very seriously interested in applying for the LinkedIn's "Creator Accelerator Program" to promote my business, The Bronze Spoon Investor with Steven Labrenz. My mission is to create a community for hard working blue collar workers to learn how to invest in quality companies even if they haven't been fed with a silver spoon as a child. I'm established on a few social medial platforms but am just not sure what my next steps are to really leverage my runway of being a professional sales engineer while discussing my passion which is all things about, "dividend stock investing, passive income and building wealth the blue collar way". Any thoughts? ??

Ok, what part of all this contains the exit strategy? All things end is why I ask that of every plan that I see.
