She was sitting at a table but I did not like it so we moved to a larger one. I don't like sitting at crampy tables.
I said hi, and she said hi, and she asked how I was again.
I said, I'm okay and called the waiter.
She passed me the menu and said that she wanted to treat me for some thing.
I told her that I was fine but she could have something if she wished.
She looked at me and said that she was truly sorry.
I replied, "Yeah, I know." and left it at that.
Then I felt sorry for her and threw a smile.
"It's okay. The sky hasn't fallen, the world hasn't crumbled. This is normal."
"So how's your job?"
She said that she had just started and bla bla bla...
I told that her that she was talented and she should use her skills while learning new things, and she should become a successful person someday.
"When?" she asked me.
"After I'm dead, I'm sure." I replied honestly.
She looked at me again, "How can you say that?"
"You know it's true. I like facts. As you know well."
I smiled at her again. I don't like lying, even if it's pleasing.
"So. You have been taking the personality tests. Tell me about them." I dove straight into the agenda so that we would not waste our time.
"I am an ESFJ" she replied.
"Ummph... No wonder you resigned" I immediately regretted bringing the topic back.
"Why?" she asked.
"You don't handle criticisms well, so you ran out of the situation."
"No I didn't..." she tried to explain.
"The long and short of it was you did. That's okay." I wanted to not continue talking about her resignation.
"What are you?" she asked for my MBTI type.
"Check up Jesus Christ" I gave the short answer.
"Really?" she answered in amazement, "And what does that mean?"
"Check it up" was my reply.
"I'm sorry" she apologized again. "I know you are angry."
"I'm not." I said, "You new boss should be doing this."
Yes, I considered it a time cost. I was actually doing someone else's job of grooming up his staff.
"But I am more comfortable with you" she pleaded.
"No difference." I replied. The answer didn't jive with anything nor meant anything. It's just what I say when I don't care.
She looked at me with a very sorry look.
"Do you think the personality fits with whom you know you are?" I asked her.
"Yes, I do. I like helping people, so it fits with my goal of becoming a trainer."
"Okay. Now remember that we were talking about what you want to do with your life." I said.
"Yes...." she replied thoughtfully.
"So what kind of trainer do you want to be? Think about your whole life. Not now, or one year from now or five years from now. Imagine your entire life, what kind of trainer do you want to be?"
"A good trainer?" she asked.
"What kind of good trainer? That is not specific, I cannot visualize it." I wanted an answer that can be visualized.
"A lot of companies would want me to train their staffs. Big multi-national companies would be my clients. I would have my own training company." she replied.
"That's all? Lots of people have those" I pointed out.
"Yeah, that'll do." she nodded eagerly.
"Don't you want to do something like change the entire humankind? Would that be called developing people too?"
"Wow, nooo... " she laughed, "That's too big!"
"Yeah, but aren't we talking about your entire life, your one only life, your one single shot at being alive? Don't you want to do it?" I pressed her on.
"Of course I do, but how do I do it?"
"Bring on something new, something no one has thought about. Make it your contribution to mankind." I explained.
"Like what?" she could not see it.
"Stephen Covey has his 7+1 habits, Eckhart Tolle has his Power of Now, Simon Sinek has his Begin With Why, come up with something that is yours entirely. Something not copied or modified from elsewhere."
Her eyes grew big and shone. But I was not really taken in, her new boss should actually be doing what I was doing. Yet she was still on my time cost.

3 年Never been ask that question but if I were asked, I would answer something I learned from the movie “The Core - 2003”. When one of the character said “I came here to save my wife and my two children and... six billion lives... it's too much. I just hope I'm, I'm smart enough and brave enough to save three.” My answer will be, “I just hope I am smart and brave enough to change my world by being a good husband and a good father. Maybe my daughter will get the chance to change the world.”
