"Don't You Ever Have Sales?"? A humorous look at communication.

"Don't You Ever Have Sales?" A humorous look at communication.

I recently heard a story about a conversation that occurred between a team member and a potential customer in a product-based business. The customer had come into the store to look at items for potential purchase. Many of those items had higher price points. A team member approached the customer and a brief conversation ensued.

It wasn't long before the customer asked the team member a question...

"Don't You Ever Have Sales?"

The team member was aghast and replied,

"We wouldn't be in business very long if we didn't!"

That brief exchange was a great demonstration of how the same words can take on different meanings to different people - even when they speak the same "language". In this case, the customer wanted to know if they could potentially get a better price. The team member took those same words as a suggestion that the business was unsuccessful because no one was buying in the moment. Hurt, confusion, a potential lack of sale...

Are you investing time as a leader to improve your communication skills?

Communication is critical to organizational success. Miscommunication leads to lost time, lost sales, lost connections, and lost opportunities.

There is good news! You can improve communication. You can learn to understand the personality behaviors of yourself and others to greatly lessen potential miscommunications.
