Don't Worry If You Don't Wake up Super Early

Recently, I’ve read a few articles implying that people should wake up well before the sun rises in order to be more productive.

Apple CEO Tim Cook wakes up at 3:45 a.m. to send e-mails and workout, while Disney CEO Bob Iger wakes up forty-five minutes later at 4:30 a.m to read the news, e-mail, and exercise.

The sentiment behind these early wake-up times are valid. If you wake up before most people, you have the time to focus solely on yourself without distraction from others.

Not everyone, though, has the luxury to wake up in the wee hours of the morning. Perhaps you have to be on a late-night conference call, or pick up a kid from soccer practice in the evening. Or, perhaps you simply aren’t a morning person (seriously, it’s backed by science).

So, don’t worry if you don’t wake up super early.

Instead, try and find a couple hours during the day (or night) that you can block off to solely focus on yourself. Perhaps this means focusing on a project for work, catching up on a good book, or devoting time to learn a new skill.

In an ideal world, these couple hours should be free from people, social-media, and other unnecessary distractions.

How do you eliminate these distractions though?

  1. Tell people you are busy and should not be disturbed during this time by marking time off on your calendar or simply notifying those around you or those who might disturb you.
  2. If you don’t need to use your phone or laptop, put it away and turn off any notifications you might get.
  3. Use noise-cancelling headphones to eliminate hearing unnecessary conversations or other loud noises.

What other tips do you have to enhance productivity? Let me know in the comments!

Waking up early in the morning does depend on the person because I have never been fond of waking up early in the morning. Even though I have to wake up early because of my schedule and that I don't have control over, for the time being.

I get up around 4 AM mainly because I do Cross Country practice at 6:30 AM and I do not want to be just rolling out of bed for that. But those hours before practice, I have them completely to yourself gives me that ability to solely focus on whatever I need to accomplish, or just go for a morning walk. I know everyone is not the same way, so to be productive during the day just turn on airplane mode on your phone and commit 45-60 minutes at a time to solely focusing on one task. For those that maybe want to be an early riser, whenever you usually go to bed just commit to sleeping and getting up five minutes earlier every night that way it does not feel too hard. Once you hit the desired bedtime, do your best to stick to it (even on weekends for best results) and the longer it is maintained, it becomes a habit in no time.
