Don't worry, everything is Fine.
As April arrives, it brings a time to recognize and celebrate Autism Awareness Month. This month is particularly close to my heart because last year, I discovered that my son Benicio has autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
The journey to a diagnosis was long and emotional for our family. Like many parents, Thaise Namora and I noticed developmental differences in our son, but we weren't sure what they meant. We spent months researching and seeking advice from doctors and therapists before finally receiving the diagnosis.
Discovering that your child has autism can be a difficult and confusing time. But it's important to remember that a diagnosis doesn't define your child. Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects social interaction, communication, and behavior. However, it's also important to understand that every individual with autism has unique strengths and challenges. E.g., Benny is great with arts (he sings well and perfectly a bunch of songs and draws like Basquiat) and logic but has a challenging situation with having things only under his control.
Autism Awareness Month is an opportunity for us to celebrate and promote neurodiversity. This means recognizing and valuing the differences in how individuals' brains work, including those with ASD. Instead of trying to change individuals with autism to fit into a predetermined mold, we should celebrate their unique strengths and abilities.

Promoting neurodiversity is particularly important in the workplace. Employers can create a more inclusive environment by recognizing and accommodating the needs of individuals with autism. For example, some individuals with autism may benefit from flexible work hours or a quiet workspace.
Early diagnosis and intervention are also vital to improving outcomes for individuals with autism. The earlier a child is diagnosed, the sooner they can receive the support and services they need to thrive. It's essential for parents and caregivers to be aware of the signs of autism and to seek an evaluation if they have concerns.
As we celebrate Autism Awareness Month, let's promote acceptance, inclusion, and understanding for individuals with autism. It's also an opportunity for us to raise awareness about the challenges faced by individuals with autism and their families. Doing so can create a more supportive and compassionate society for everyone.
