*Note - I am not a professional writer or even close to it, but this is just an attempt to inspire people like me :)
Alright so here I am with a job in California as a Project Coordinator. Doing well in job, have a new car, great apartment to live in and everything seems so perfect but is that what I dreamt? May be, may be not! I don't know and I am still looking!
Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart. - Jobs
Let me tell you that I got my associate degree (Diploma) in Computer Technology, and honestly I had no interest in computers. But I did it because my dad insisted. Later I got my bachelors in Information Technology from one of the best colleges in Mumbai, India. I had a job offer already with me before I graduated, doesn't it sound great? I worked a little bit and just realized - "Nope! This is not what I want to do". I started preparing for my masters. I got into CSU, Chico to get masters degree in Computer Science- One of the best thing happened in my life.
Lots of things happened in past 3 years from the time I landed in USA and now. While I was studying, in one of my computer class there was a lady who must be in her 50's. I curiously asked her - "What brings you here". She asked me - "Why do you ask". I explained that in India, usually people of her age is either planning for retirement, or just enjoy the rest of the life with family. She smiled and replied - " I just love how technology works and I am very curious to learn, so I took the class". I was shocked!!!
I just realized that I am running in a race, where I don't even know the destination.
Why do I say this? When I started my masters degree, I started feeling burden to complete rather than learning. I did not enjoy like that lady, I just felt I am doing it so that I can get a better job. I was forcing myself to do something which I don't even enjoy! I knew that I don't want this anymore, I was 2 semester far from my masters. "Should I change my major? No, that will be so foolish that I was so close to get a masters and I did not even try. I will waste all the money, etc." - these were all the thoughts running in my mind.
Sometimes when you innovate, you make mistakes. It is best to admit them quickly, and get on with improving your other innovations. - Jobs
I decided to complete my masters but I know I don't want to work in the field what I studied. I approached another way. I was highly involved on my campus being president of two clubs and a great student job in a Student Affairs department. I cannot be more thankful to my mentors Joel Ramirez and Mary Wallmark, who offered me this student job and guided me to where I am right now.
Well, I am still working in technology field but I am not making technology. I am managing people who are making that technology! I knew that I like technology and understand how it works, and also I knew how people work together, so I started looking for jobs with such profile. And once you believe in yourself and want it so bad, somehow things workout and you get what you want.
I am not saying that this is what I wanted, but at least this is something closer to what I want. I still don't know what I really want. I have so many other dreams - Motivational speaker, Event Manager, Restaurant Owner, Meditation Teacher, Entrepreneur, etc. I haven't stopped dreaming and I am not settled yet, so should you! Everyday I keep looking for opportunities because you never know how you may get one. So keep your eyes and heart open!
Don't waste your dreams!!!
