don't waste time when you find the right people!
On average when a company has an opening, from the time they begin the search to the time an offer is accepted about 56 days get checked off the calendar. And to top that off, the new staff member generally has to give at least two weeks’ notice before they can start. That means there is a lag of well over two months until the fresh faced star your company is depending on strolls through the front door for their first day of work.
Currently, unemployment in the Twin Cities hovering around 3% (according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, it is 2.9% at the time of this writing) that search to start period is not about to get any shorter!
Just a few years ago we were experiencing a totally different scenario. Back then, filling a position was a quick process as companies had a much larger pool of candidates from which to choose.
I have always believed it is important to hire slow and make sure one has the most right individual for a job. But with that said, I have also had to realize, being too slow to act in this job market opens the door for your competitors to hire away your would-be "new employee"...leaving you with only a memory and another two month search.
