Don't Waste My Time!

In freelancing and consultancy, one-on-one consultations play a crucial role in establishing meaningful connections and, ultimately, making sales. However, not all consultations are created equal.

A recent experience with a popular LinkedIn expert shed light on the importance of professionalism, punctuality, and the art of offering genuine value.

The Disappointing Consultation

The incident involved a top creator who offered a free one-hour consultation on LinkedIn strategies. Despite booking a week in advance and diligently waiting for the scheduled time, the creator failed to show up.

After a rescheduled meeting, the actual consultation lasted a mere 7 minutes, dominated by a hurried attempt to upsell a $1,500 training program. The overall experience left me disappointed and questioning the professionalism of a supposed 'expert'.

Lessons in Consultation Etiquette

1?? Punctuality is Key:

Punctuality isn't just a nicety; it's a fundamental aspect of building trust. As the saying goes, "First impressions matter." Whether virtual or physical, being on time reflects commitment and respect for the client's time.

2?? Offer Value First:

A successful consultation begins with building a personal connection in the first five minutes. The next five should focus on delivering genuine value related to the client's needs or aspirations.

Only after establishing this connection should upselling be introduced, done respectfully and without pressure.

3?? Set Clear Standards:

Freelancers should set clear standards for their business, distinguishing between free clarity calls and paid consultations.

Clearly communicate the duration and expectations for each type of session to manage client expectations.

4?? Be Remorseful and Apologize:

Life happens, and sometimes appointments are missed. In such cases, freelancers should proactively reach out, apologize sincerely, and provide a valid reason.

Avoid directing the client to check your calendar for the next availability; instead, offer alternatives and show genuine remorse.

5?? Go the Extra Mile:

The client-freelancer relationship extends beyond the consultation. Going the extra mile, whether through bonus offerings, discounts, or exceptional service, demonstrates commitment and builds long-lasting partnerships.

Creating Positive Consultation Experiences

In contrast to the disappointing experience, I emphasize the importance of creating positive consultation experiences.

From hosting virtual events to getting to know guests and clients personally, the focus should be on establishing genuine connections, not just making sales.

The moral of the story is clear: freelancers and consultants must prioritize professionalism, punctuality, and customer service.

By setting clear standards, offering genuine value, and going the extra mile, they can build lasting relationships with clients.

In a competitive market, the art of consultations goes beyond selling a service; it's about creating an experience that clients value and remember.
