What’s inside this issue: Are you using the 2 riskiest marketing “strategies”? | “Where Are All the Good Clients” Minisodes #1 & #2 | Have you signed up for the Potential Clients on Tap with AI LIVE event on May 29th?
If you’ve been following me for a while, you’ve probably already…
Updated your LinkedIn “about” section to speak to your ideal clients’ needs…
Come up with an attention-grabbing headline…
And you’re spending your 30 minutes a day making comments on other people’s posts.
Excellent. Now all that’s left to do is wait to be discovered by clients, right?
Or maybe you’re getting clients by word of mouth and your calendar is so full, there’s no way you’d have time to market yourself, anyway!
Unfortunately, waiting to get “discovered” and depending on “word of mouth” are the two riskiest strategies I know of. And neither of them count as marketing!
I recently shared my (somewhat controversial) opinion that word of mouth is not a marketing method, and was pleasantly surprised to see that most commenters agreed.
I especially loved these three comments from Corinna vanGerwen , Celine Horan ALS, ACS , and Lisa Marie H. :
Lisa’s right that depending on word of mouth (like waiting to be discovered) is letting your impostor syndrome run your business.
When you wait for clients to find or recommend you, instead of looking for the clients you really want, you get to avoid being rejected. But you also avoid building the business you truly want.
So, what should you do?
Get some ideas for what to do first by watching Minisodes #1 & #2 in my new series: Where Are All the Good Clients?
Minisode #1: Why Aren’t Clients Finding Me?
Minisode #2: How Can I Get More Word of Mouth Clients?
Yes, it’s possible that one day the stars will align and the perfect client will come knocking at your door. But you can’t build a dependable business on the stars.
If you want clients and projects you love, you need to find organizations and people you are interested in and know you can help.
Step 1: It starts with you.
Look for the clients you’re best suited to serve because of:
Step 2: Keep a list of those you feel inspired to help.
And if you don’t know who you feel inspired to help right away, try listening inside yourself for a little voice that says, “I can help with that.”
