Don’t Use Injury Costs In Your Next Presentation (Use This Instead)
You created and gave the perfect presentation…injuries are up, workers’ comp costs are rising, and the resulting absenteeism is driving the DART rate to record levels! And not a single eyebrow even raised in the meeting.
Here’s a secret.
Injury costs really don’t matter when directly compared to top line items like sales and revenue. It’s like a mouse looking up at an elephant and defiantly stating, “I’m important too!”
Here’s a quick and easy (I promise) way to stand up to the elephants of sales and production numbers.
Try this link to the calculator on the Applications International Corporation (AIC) website.
You’ll need to gather only two types of information (e.g. profit margin and either workers’ comp costs or type of injury). When you enter these two data points and click “Add/Calculate”, you’ll see the amount of additional sales necessary to compensate for the losses incurred (both direct and indirect costs). The AIC calculator even allows you to combine multiple injuries and export the file to Excel!
Will using this method always work to direct resources to injury prevention? No (and if you know of a way, please send it my way). But it’s one way for the EHS professional to better connect with fundamental business numbers.
