Don't Try to Sell on LinkedIn

LinkedIn is a unique platform that provides us with a tremendous opportunity to connect, learn, and grow professionally. It's a virtual space where we can nurture meaningful relationships, exchange knowledge, and explore collaborations. However, it's important to remember that LinkedIn is not primarily a sales platform.
Building Trust and Credibility:
LinkedIn is all about building trust and credibility with your connections. It's crucial to establish a genuine connection by engaging with their content, offering valuable insights, and sharing industry knowledge. By focusing on building relationships rather than making immediate sales, you create a foundation of trust that can lead to long-term partnerships and business opportunities.
Professional Networking:
LinkedIn is an expansive network of professionals from various industries, backgrounds, and roles. It's a treasure trove of knowledge and expertise that can be leveraged for professional growth. Instead of treating it as a sales pitch platform, view LinkedIn as an opportunity to network, learn from others, and contribute to meaningful conversations. Engage in discussions, ask insightful questions, and demonstrate your expertise to establish yourself as a thought leader in your field.
Providing Value:
Selling on LinkedIn often comes across as intrusive and can hinder the positive networking experience. I cannot begin to tell you how dispiriting it is to get a connection request from someone who looks as if they are ready to establish a professional relationship, which I accept, then it becomes an immediate DM asking me to book a meeting or buy a product or service.
I submit that it is generally true that people are more inclined to buy from people they know and trust. Establishing a relationship and building trust with potential customers is crucial in the sales process. Cold calling can still be a part of some sales strategies, but it is generally less effective compared to other methods that involve warmer leads or established relationships. Building trust and credibility through referrals, networking, online presence, testimonials, or personal connections often yield better results in sales.

Instead of selling right off the bat, focus on providing value to your connections. Share relevant industry news, helpful resources, or thought-provoking articles that align with your professional interests. By consistently offering valuable content, you position yourself as a trusted resource and build a reputation that attracts potential clients or partners naturally.
Collaboration and Partnerships:
LinkedIn is an ideal platform for fostering collaborations and partnerships. Rather than approaching individuals with a sales pitch, seek out synergies and mutually beneficial opportunities. Engage in conversations, explore common interests, and identify how your skills or services can complement each other. Building a strong network based on collaboration can open doors to exciting projects and business ventures.
Shifting Perspectives:
Remember that your LinkedIn connections are professionals like yourself, seeking growth and success. Approach conversations with a mindset of collaboration and support, aiming to understand their needs and goals. By focusing on building relationships and providing value, you create an environment that encourages others to engage with you and consider your expertise when the time is right.
Let's utilize LinkedIn as a platform to connect, learn, and grow together. By shifting our focus from immediate sales to building meaningful relationships and providing value, we can create a supportive community that benefits all its members.
