Don't Trip Over My Limp

Don't Trip Over My Limp

In the leadership journey, we often encounter individuals with unique traits and challenges that might seem imperfect at first glance. However, it's crucial to recognize that these differences do not diminish their value, capabilities, or potential contributions. Instead, they can be the very elements that add unparalleled depth and perspective to our teams.

My Story: Beyond the Limp (It happened just yesterday.)

My meeting with a particular client meeting left a lasting impression on me, not because of the business outcome, but because of a personal experience that underscored a significant lesson in leadership. As I was coming down a staircase, I had to hold onto the wall due to suffering from a limp. My hip was bothering me, perhaps due to the rain. The client, noticing my difficulty, sarcastically remarked, as if my physical challenge had anything to do with my professional acumen or intelligence.

The irony was palpable. This same client, whose partner had severe allergies and sensitivity to air quality, had received numerous accommodations from me to ensure their comfort during our visits to various establishments. Despite my efforts to create an inclusive and supportive environment for him, my need for accommodation (patience with my hip pain) was met with derision.

Diamonds Are Made of Many Cuts

This experience reminded me of the process of refining diamonds. Each cut and imperfection adds to a diamond's value. Similarly, individuals' experiences and challenges contribute to their strength and resilience. As leaders, we must challenge our biases daily, see beyond these surface-level imperfections, and recognize each person's value.

The Cost of Bias

When leaders focus on PERCEIVED imperfections—whether related to physical abilities, race, nationality, gender, or faith—they risk marginalizing valuable team members and leaving a wealth of potential untapped. These biases can lead to missed innovation, collaboration, and growth opportunities. Yes, this is still happening; therefore, we need to continue to address it and help correct thinking and practices.

Imagine a workplace where everyone feels valued and empowered, where you celebrate differences as strengths and diverse perspectives drive collective success. Enhancing your environment is an attainable ideal but a practical necessity for any organization aiming for high performance and sustainable success.

A Call to Higher Leadership

As leaders, we must elevate our approach to equity and collaboration. We need to foster environments where every team member, regardless of their differences, can thrive and contribute to their fullest potential. Creating a healthy and safe culture involves actively challenging our biases, embracing diversity, and focusing on the character and abilities of individuals.

This reminds me of the importance of extending grace and love despite how others fail to return the same. It makes me want to dig deeper to keep extending with God's strength in the midst of neglect. Thanks for sharing Yvette Owens, CCMP
