It's a common phrase probably we hear daily at least once from our family, friends, or colleagues when we are at anxiety and worry about some prospective or retrospective stuff. Probabilities are we feel that the world looks nastier than it is, but how many of us could do that when doubts or anxieties are a normal part of life—impossible, right.
We are tormented by constant anxious thoughts, which will always pounce our hearts and grab our head and make us feel our head will burst, and we expect some soft hands on your shoulder and head, massaging to ease the stress derived from the thoughts. It's a temporary comfort you get, and then the whole process restarts until your body accepts the fear or anxiety. But imagine the number of days or time you took to overcome the situation when you probably heard this magical phrase "don't think" too much from your loved ones but never practiced it.
Now you may think It's natural to worry, but this natural becomes excessive when it's overpowering you with no control over it. You overthink every day about questioning your situations, and these thoughts keep taunting your head, and it conflicts every time with your life, how it is possible to stop thinking about it when we are prone to connect or looped from one thinking to another, which goes throughout our life span. We are programmed like that.
But we should realize the power of us, where we could control our minds by saying that don't think too much, means, Yes we can stop our mind thinking on an issue (like the scene from the movie Matrix where Keanu Reeves (Neo) stops the bullets fired to him), but you could still make yourself move forward. I can tell you it worked for me.
Habit is something created from our instinct or influenced by someone or any situation applied in our lives. Our life today works or exist because of these habits.
We always think that we need strong determination to adapt or change habits as, at times, we are all victims of failing to try new or changing habits. But the reality is not because we don't have determination; it's something where we are not trying to understand how it works.
I could say how it worked for me and how I created a new habit. I started hitting the gym and had a chance to make a friend from there, where we agreed to be tag partners to help each other achieve their desired goals and started rigorously working out. When we do body exercise or lifting weights, we always define our mind with a count of 10 to 12 reps for each set, and more the sets we do, there are chances we get exhausted and go lesser counts on the reps. Once, while doing abs crunch, I always set a limit of 30 rep to complete in my mind before starting the activity, but it didn't go as I expected, when I reached around 25 rep, I was about to give up, but my tag partner didn't allow as we agreed we need to push each other to reach our desired goals. He screamed in my ears, saying, "don't think," repeatedly for each crunch, he called, "don't think." I wasn't sure why he was saying, "Don't Think." I could have stopped because my mind was saying I am exhausted, I can't do anymore, it's ok you reached close to the target. But I decided to listen. Moreover, his duty as a partner is to push each other. So I gave the command to my mind saying Stop thinking. Surprisingly I couldn't believe I went much more than 30 rep and hit 50 counts. I was surprised it worked, such a simple phrase or words helped me to do more. It was a turning point for me. I was analyzing how it could be possible that my body could do more when I stopped thinking too much about the limit I set or the limit I crossed likewise.
This is what happens in most of our life where a circumstance comes we overthink too much on it. It's natural to overthink a situation going to happen in the future or which is already happened and keep regretting the same, and this overthink keeps growing and becomes excessive and uncontrollable. It can impact your productivity, emotional strength, leave you feeling restless, giving sleepless nights, and stress making it difficult for you to concentrate on life. This is where the rule of "Don't think too much" can help. You could either stop thinking about it or challenge your thoughts and stop thinking further by asking yourself, Is there a more positive, realistic way of looking at the situation? if you got solution stick on to it or else don't think too much
Overthinking is a habit that can be cracked. You can train your mind to control and look at life from a more balanced, less fearful perspective. Next time when you are overthinking, try "Don't think" and if you believe it doesn't work for you, try doing push-ups, and when your mind says not possible, ask him/her to Don't Think. I bet you would go 10 reps more :)

4 年Yeah, thinking too much is not good, there used to be the time when the "Purpose of my thinking" used to be "STOP THINKING." Once I realized thinking too much is not bad always. Sometimes thinking too much can lead to the most innovative idea or an incredible solution to the particular problem. And what we think is most important than how much we think instead. Anyway, wonderful article.

4 年Interesting! Yes,overthinking keeps us in fear, misery, inaction and compel us to go with the path of least resistance; which is always ''safe' with mediocre outcome.
