Don't sweat it! - 5 top tips to driving safe in the summer sun

Summer driving can pose many challenges.

Over the last week conditions have been extremely hot at times, so it's important that you talk to your drivers so they remain safe on the roads.

Specifically, you should remind your drivers to:

1) Take driving breaks to prevent fatigue/drowsiness. If your drivers feel sleepy you should advise them to:

  • Find a safe place to stop. (Remember that it's illegal and dangerous to stop on the motorway hard shoulder, except in an emergency)
  • Take a 10 to 15 minute nap to refresh*
  • Take a short walk and have a coffee or tea before driving again

2) Use the vehicles air con to keep the vehicle cool or open windows to keep the vehicle well ventilated

3) Remain hydrated, drinking more water as the body "uses" more moisture to keep the body cool, combating the heat

4) Check the coolant reservoir level regularly of their vehicle (to ensure the engine does not overheat)

5) Look out for wet or white staining on vehicle coolant hoses, indicating a leak in the hose requiring the hose to be replaced.

* Do not take a longer nap than 15 minute, as the body goes into deep sleep in the period 15-20 minutes, taking longer to "wake up", according to Professor Sir Neil Douglas in this BBC article - https://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/300940.stm

Thank you for taking the time to read this article and I encourage you to share these tips with your colleagues and should you have any queries relating to road safety please feel free to post of comment or drop me a message here on Linkedin.
