I’ve had a lot of responsibility over the course of my time as an entrepreneur. Responsibility for people’s careers, people’s hopes and dreams, people’s bachelorette party dresses, and a lot of people’s money. And at one point or another, I’ve disappointed them all.?

Stephen Hawking once said that “life would be tragic if it weren’t so funny.”?

Lately, I’ve felt like I have enough distance from my offenses that I can finally make light of them. Unfortunately, it tends to make people uncomfortable. For example, when I electively bring up (with a healthy dose of levity) that my first company went bankrupt, people don’t know whether to laugh or sympathize with me. Their faces freeze in fear not knowing what emotion to mirror back at me. They act as though it’s abnormal to move beyond what you’ve done to become who you are.?

All that is to say that we all face challenges, we all fail, and we will continue to disappoint others and ourselves. But the only true failure is to stop taking risks and placing bets. The key, I’ve learned, is to redefine how we internalize so-called “failure.” Expect there to be casualties along the way—just don’t let your self-worth be one of them.?

In the world of fitness, they say that your next workout is only as good as your last recovery. No one escapes failure –– but it’s the grace by which you dismount and what your next move is that matters.?
